Alice Zaslavsky

Alice Zaslavsky Well, hello there! I share thoughtful, veg-forward recipes that are low-fuss, low-waste and max-satisfaction! 👋

Her second, In Praise of Veg has been translated into multiple languages and was awarded the 2021 ABIA for Best Illus

trated Non-Fiction. The former head of department-turned-Masterchef crowd favourite has spent close to a decade helping individuals (both big and small) join the dots between cuisine, culture and sustainability. She specialises in hosting live events with translators, including Iron Chef Live (feat. the original Japanese Iron Chefs) and the Estrella Damm Gastronomy Congress (feat. some of the world’s best Spanish and Basque chefs). As a super-taster and specialty food judge, Alice has adjudicated the Grand Champion at the Fine Food Awards (4 years), Grand Dairy Awards (3 years) as well as American Barbecue competitions through KCBS international certification. Still thinking about how moving Rone’s new art installation is, fitted within WEEKS into a vacant site at Chaddy. It’s called “Home” and whichever home it takes you in your mind’s eye, I guarantee you’ll forget you’re in a shopping centre. Every intricate detail painstakingly put together by Tyron, his wife Alice, and their team. Every cobweb, dust dapple and runaway ivy constructed to take you there. I felt compelled to show it to you, since Lucy Rosenberg | Food Lover and I snaffled an impromptu guided tour once everyone else had chuffed off from the ‘house party’ to launch it. Very special indeed. .

I scored some knobbly Jerusalem artichokes from a friend’s garden this afternoon, and they’re just so sweet and delish!
Here’s what I did:
Preheated the oven (with tray inside) to 180C fan. Split most of them in half, trim off any darker tops, rinse and toss with salt flakes, then olive oil.
Lined the preheated tray with baking paper, then roasted x 40 mins until they were gooey in the middle and golden outside ✨
If I had the patience, I would’ve soaked them overnight to ‘deflaut’ them, as Matt Preston would say, but a little bit of extra inulin couldn’t hurt, right? 😉

If you’re looking for speed, nutrient-density, and tenderness, you can’t go past steam!
Whether you’re updating your oven to a combi-steam, or dipping a toe in with a benchtop smartcooker, you’ll love what steam can do for a recipe. Here’re a few ways I like to use steam, with thanks to my , The Good Guys 💖

It was a tremendously heart-filling experience to visit Phoenix P-12 Community College today to see their school lunches program in action.
Whenever I’m out of town with a little spare time, I like to visit a local school doing inspiring things in food literacy, and this was one of the best holistic programs I’ve seen! Congratulations PCC - may it grow from strength to strength!

FISHING IN SAN REMO! ✨
Amanda Keilar finally got us out on a fishing charter to drop some lines last Friday. And the water was so calm that we even managed to get out around Cape Woollamai!
For keen 📻 listeners, you’ll be happy to finally see the face of the lady who gave us the most emphatic, enthusiastic fishing reports for all those years!
the most luck on the water, of course. She caught the first fish, the biggest fish and the MOST fish, even though she was up against some very experienced fisherfolk.
The has been a part of the Victorian fishing and fish-loving community since the 40s, and it continues to innovate. A truly inspiring community organisation! Thank you Amanda, Terry, Wolfgang, Craig and co for our wonderful day. We were very lucky to have been , but will be chartering of our own volition every so often now that we’ve caught the 🎣 bug! ✨
