Small kitchens can be a bit of a puzzle. There’s only so much space to work with, but the list of things that need to fit rarely gets any shorter.

This kitchen was a good example.

The original layout had limited bench space, awkward storage and a breakfast bar that separated the kitchen from the living area without really offering much in return.

The challenge wasn't simply to make it look better. It was to make every bit of available space work harder.

We rethought the layout, improved storage, introduced more usable bench space and opened up the connection to the adjoining living and dining areas. Lighter finishes, timber cabinetry and a few softer details helped make the space feel more generous without changing its actual footprint.

And that's the thing about designing small spaces. It's not always about finding more room. Sometimes it's about making better decisions with the room you already have.

Sometimes a space just doesn't make sense.

This was one of those spaces.

It was trying to be a lounge, a TV area, a casual sitting area and just about everything in between. The problem was that it didn't really serve any one purpose particularly well.

And given its position alongside the kitchen, it seemed a missed opportunity.

Rather than simply rearranging the furniture, we decided to rethink how the space could be used.

The solution was to introduce a custom-built banquette, creating a casual dining area that feels like a natural extension of the kitchen. Somewhere to enjoy a meal, have a morning coffee, catch up over a glass of w**e or simply sit and chat while someone else does the cooking.

We continued the same timber used throughout the home, including the kitchen, laundry, wardrobes and bathrooms. A simple way of connecting the different spaces without making everything look the same.

The upholstered seating, cushions and furniture brought warmth, comfort and a bit of personality.

What I enjoy about transformations like this is that we haven't changed how much space there is. We've simply made better use of what was already there.

Sometimes the answer isn't another piece of furniture or another function squeezed into an already confused space.

It's deciding what you actually want the space to do, and giving it the opportunity to do it well.

Same size kitchen. Very different renovation budgets. Why?

It's a question that comes up often, and the answer isn't always as straightforward as you might think.

Two kitchens with exactly the same footprint can have vastly different renovation costs.

From layout changes and services to cabinetry, materials, appliances and the complexity of the work involved, every decision has a bearing on the final investment.

But here's the important bit.

A bigger budget doesn't automatically deliver better design.

Good design is about making considered choices, understanding priorities and finding the right balance between what you want to achieve and what you're comfortable investing.

It's not simply about what you spend, but how wisely you spend it.

The podcast is live. Apparently, I had a few things to say. 🤣

Thank you to Dave Harvey for inviting me onto Designing Australia and making room for an honest conversation about running a design practice.

We talked about quieter pipelines, changing client priorities, the value of design and the self-doubt that can creep in when business slows. Also, the importance of staying connected to industry colleagues and being able to talk about the difficult periods as openly as we share the wins.

I’m navigating these questions myself. Awards and good work don’t make you immune to uncertainty.

If you’re finding things quiet, I hope this conversation helps you feel a little less alone. And if you’re considering working with a designer, it offers some insight into the thinking behind the finished spaces.

They live here too.

I spend a lot of time talking about designing homes around the way people actually live.

Perhaps I should amend that.
Around the way families actually live.

Because for many of us, animals aren't pets that happen to share the house.

They're family.

Walter certainly doesn't consider himself an accessory to ours. In fact, judging by his occasional position on the dining table, I'm not entirely convinced he understands the hierarchy at all.

He sleeps where he wants. Sits where he wants. Follows us from room to room. Leaves hair in places that defy both logic and vacuum cleaners.

And we love him enormously.

Our animals become woven into the way we live. They greet us as though we've returned from war when we've only been to Woolies.

They sit beside us when we're quiet. They seem to know when something isn't quite right. And somehow, simply by being there, they make a house feel more like home.

So perhaps it's not surprising that they should find their way into the design too.

A fabric that forgives. Flooring that gives an older dog some grip. A place for bowls, leads and the collection of increasingly disgusting favourite toys.

Somewhere cool in summer, warm in winter and, most importantly, somewhere close to their people.

None of it needs to scream pet friendly.

It's simply good design responding to the lives being lived within it.

Because our animals don't think of themselves as an addition to the family.

We are their family.
This is their home.
And we are their people.

Designing with them in mind isn't really a compromise.
It's another small expression of love.

Although Walter's interpretation of inclusive design apparently includes unrestricted access to the dining table.🫣

We remain in negotiations. ❤️

Two bathrooms. One apartment. One design language.

Renovating different spaces within the same home doesn’t mean making them identical.

Here, the bathrooms share a material language of warm stone, aged bronze, textured glass and soft lighting, while each has its own identity.

Repeating finishes and details creates connection. Changing their application gives each space its own character.
Because cohesion isn’t about matching everything.

It’s about making considered choices that feel like they belong together.

And yes, I may have developed a slight attachment to that patterned natural stone mosaic tile. Occupational hazard.

Not all glitz and glamour. Sometimes interior design is a chat in the car park, a few questions and finding a solution that makes life easier.

The pretty part matters. So does making sure it all works.

Considered choices. Every finish plays a part.

The warmth and variation of stone-look tiles, the softness of brushed metal, the subtle texture of cabinetry and the curves of mirrors and basins. Each brings something different, but it’s how they work together that gives these bathrooms their character.

Materiality might sound a little designer-ish. Really, it’s about how a space looks, feels and comes together.

And who said art can’t make its way into a bathroom? A little culture and colour while you soak seems perfectly reasonable to me. 😉
