This taonga was brought to us by wikitoria , bequeathed to her passed own through her famiy made originally in the 1800s coming from a place called Piupiu .
The piece itself ha been drilled and chipped at that point which would make any carver nervous , with no wrapping or chord she asked us to give it a new lease on life .
Victoria is from Taranaki , the taonga had belonged to her uncle who identified as tōhunga ( see comments for meaning) and she herself is spiritualy gifted so extra care wa taken during the re work process of this one , all work was done entirely underwater , this piece was completey sumberged until finished, then karakia were said and it took its first breath of new life post wrapping.
We felt the love with this one 🙏 thankyou for trusting KVC , thankyou for choosing in your honor to rejuvenate your keep sake .
This design has been flipped horizontal the hoki ( fish hook) now depicts our customer as a small koru looking back towards her maunga taranaki nestled under the larger reaching koru ( spiral) from accros the ocean here in Australia . Hailing from king country in NZ packs a bit of mana so we chose the “niho o te taniwha” ( teeth of the taniwha ) wrap in adjustable black waxed leather chord for this one .
Welcome home to your whaea taonga , tena koe engari KiaOra mo to mahi 🙏. If your taonga needs some new love come and see us! this was such a menaingful job THANKYOU
