Dumping ground

The Atacama Desert, one of Earth's driest places, now holds a stark visual reminder of our consumption habits: nearly 60,000 tonnes of discarded clothing, visible from satellite images. Outside Alto Hospicio in Chile, mountains of unwanted garments pile up—winter jackets still tagged, sportswear, children's clothes—most of them never worn.

The story behind these piles reveals how global fast fashion creates waste at every step. Clothes arrive by the thousands of tonnes from the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia through the port of Iquique. Some get resold across Latin America, giving them a second life. But the ones that can't be sold—damaged, outdated, or simply surplus—become someone else's problem. When proper disposal costs too much, illegal dumping becomes the easier choice.

What makes this crisis particularly troubling is the materials themselves. Synthetic fabrics like polyester can linger in the environment for decades. When burned, they release harmful pollutants. When exposed to sun and wind, they break down into microplastics that infiltrate ecosystems and communities.

Local authorities and residents near these waste mountains are asking a crucial question: who's responsible for cleaning up the mess created by international commerce? Some companies are experimenting with textile recycling—turning scraps into insulation and construction materials. Chile's strengthening regulations are pushing producers to take greater responsibility. But these solutions feel small against the scale of what's happening in the desert. The Atacama mountain isn't just an environmental eyesore. It's a mirror reflecting how the speed and volume of modern fashion has outpaced our ability to handle what we throw away.
