We drove up to the central plateau on the weekend.

It’s one of those landscapes that really captures you: ancient Jurassic dolerite scattered across the lakeside, iron oxidising slowly over millennia into that pale, rust-stained bleach. Like the land has been pulling itself apart for a thousand years.

That’s where this glaze, Tundra is inspired by.

Before the mould, there’s the master.

Every piece at the studio starts here: a hand-built original that becomes the template for the plaster mould, which becomes the form that every cup, bowl and mug is cast from.

One master, made once, used indefinitely.

Eucalypt.

A glaze named after the blue gums that fill the bushland across Tasmania. The same soft, silvery green, captured in its ceramic form.

A mug built for the kind of morning that doesn’t rush.

Tarn.

Named for the still, dark rock pools scattered across Tasmania’s alpine highlands; the colour shifts between slate and deep teal depending on the light.

This is what it looks like in clay, and in your kitchen on a cold morning.

The masses have departed, and now the real winter begins! What a fun few weeks with all the extra MoFo’ers in town, the city has been alive. I sustained a little injury which will hold me back on production a little over the next few weeks, but there are still plenty of ceramics lining the shelves (for now…).

New kiln day.

When I started Hobart Hills I was firing an old share kiln every few months, full of test pieces and experiments. This Rohde makes two here at the studio now.

More capacity, more consistency, and honestly a signal to myself that this thing is real and it’s growing.

Share bowls! Seems to be my most popular serving piece at the moment. Perfect for a small salad or side dish on a shared table, or bake your dessert in them and plonk it on the table!
