Welcome Artist of the month Penny Maddison, local Perth hills watercolour artist to the Rotary

has been painting in her favourite medium for over 45 years. It’s her obsession and what a lovely obsession to have, especially when you are quite talented at it.

Penny is a long time member of the and is currently getting excited about the upcoming International Watercolour Exhibition being held June 11- 23 at the Old Customs House in Fremantle. So all are welcome.

I enjoy framing Penny’s work as it always varies in subject matter, from pets, to abstract forms, still life and landscapes, plus she is an amazing person to boot.

Thank you Penny for sharing your skills and love of watercolour on this bright, beautiful and chilly winters morning.

Under the Surface…….

has been a very busy bee painting up the beautiful Western Australian and Perth hills landscape that will be showing at .greenhouse from the 30th of September-12th October. Johanna is joining three very talented Perth Ceramicists; Lee Woodcock , Liz Berry and Rebecca Tester who all share a connection to the beautiful Perth Hills and are taking it to South Freo as part of Wedge; the Australian Ceramics Triennale.

Johanna says she is quite honoured to be invited to showcase her paintings in this exhibition which will help evoke the feeling of being in the bush. They are beautiful and have been framed in “Cashew” stained float frames that let the landscapes speak for themselves, whilst also giving them a finished look.

So now for the schlepping, hanging and celebrating on Opening night. Congratulations Johanna they look beautiful, I hope the exhibition is a great success for all and thank you for trusting me to frame and handle your works.

For those who have read this far, get your skates on and get down there before it all sells out!!!!

La Femme

“Lady with Shawl” by Dame Laura Knight from 1926 is an absolute beauty!!! There is so much depth and detail in this aquatint etching, details revealed from different angles, it just draws you in. I do not want to part with this antique print!!!!!

But alas, I must. It is headed back over East to my client who has been waiting patiently for me to work on it. I have chosen a generous sized, rich black solid-core Conservation matt board that reveals the Plate number IX and stamp along the boarder adding interest and detail as to the artworks provenance. Framed it in a striking Italian rippled styled black frame with red detail to set it off and applied Conservation glass that has a 99% UV filter to protect this delicate piece well into the future.

Bonvoyage my dear sweet lady of the night, I will remember you fondly.

As for this time of year, there are explosions of flowers and colour everywhere, which must have inspired Gus Stuart Smith who took out First Prize in the Junior Art category for 2024 and deservedly so, it’s fun and powerful!!!

We have followed through with the colour theme and added a generously sized Crimson coloured matt board and worn black frame to make the piece pop even more.

Mum and Dad are very proud, as is Gus’s art teacher Fi from

Congratulations Gus and good luck to those entering this year’s Arts Festival.

If you have an artwork that you would like to be framed please don’t hesitate to bring it into us

Camino de Santiago

Having walked 260km in 14 days from the coastal town of Porto in Portugal to Santiago De Compostela in Spain my client came away with beautiful memories and some keepsakes which she wanted framed, to celebrate her journey.

This is the closest I have come to walking the Camino trail myself, thankfully without the blisters.

For those that have ‘The Pilgrims passport’ is awarded to those completing the walk and has a medieval style floral border, with calligraphy writing on a parchment type paper that suits the period of the middle ages of when the “Camino” or The Way of St. James was one of the most important Christian pilgrimages in the world.

We chose to highlight the passport with a deep burgundy reveal and a top matt that has a classic ceramic colour to match the parchment paper. The keepsakes that were picked up along the beach; stones and scallop shells ( the latter which are a symbol of the route) are highlighted with a simple V groove.

We didn’t want the piece to look heavy, so we chose a complimentary cashew coloured Australian made timber box frame, lined it with custom made spacers in the same colour as the top matt to give it clean lines and depth and finally topped it off with Ultra View Glass for clarity.

Understated for a memorabilia piece, which I really appreciate and so too does the client.

Women’s Ceremony

This beautiful “Women’s Ceremony” painting by Northern Territory artist Bernadine Johnson Kemarre looks stunning in its new home.

We have stretched it onto Australian-made high-quality locally resourced Araucaria (hoop pine) to ensure superior strength and durability and added a slimline Oak float frame with black interior detail. It just adds the finishing touch to allow the art to feel finished and complete on the wall.

A whopper of a piece, expertly hung by its proud new owners 😎. I love it when a plan comes together!

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck……

Then the late and great Western Australian artist Murray Gill probably painted it. I have always coveted watercolours of ducks and was recently lucky enough to come across these two unframed originals entitled “Wandering Ducks” and “Ducks by the pond”. I had to fight for them I might add, but so glad I did.

Both watercolours are embellished with pencil, acrylic and ink and are although vastly different in colour and mood, still work fabulously as a pair.

I have framed both in an elegant Italian Champagne Bellini fine moulding, with generous sized conservation solid core Matt board in ‘Pisgah’ that has been cut and floated around the beautiful deckled edge of the artwork, another layer of Pisgah underneath. Finished with Ultra Vue anti reflect glass, I will enjoy these pieces into my retirement.

This little black duck is feeling pretty chuffed.
