Happy Mother's Day, being a mum stays with you and shapes your thinking. My mother and grandmother are definitely still with me guiding my art practice in ways that I don't always recognise immediately. Here's just a little of that inspiration and for that alone I'm grateful. All women who nurture and shape this world are mothers and we'dbe lost without you. ❤️

I've been editing and reviewing work on shelves in my studio in preparation for Lava Festival in June. This reminded me that I also have a website that needs some updating❤️. It's not easy balancing creative explorations with the documentation and presentation of work but if I don't I'll just drown in my creations, not a bad way to go but...🤔.

Isabella' is a mixed media portrait of my mum taken from a photo of her in her early 20s. I love the little grin and look of reflection into the textured surface that includes old manuscript. Mum grew up in central Queensland on a pioneering farm near Greycliffe in the 1930s. It was rough. The first home was a shack with hessian walls and a dirt floor. They had very little but each other. Her mum was a music hall artist from England and father a proud Scot who had served with the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders was gassed then taken prisoner during WW1. They moved to Brisbane during WW2 so her father could defend the country. Mum never complained. She was part of the silent generation. She just got on with life and managed with a smile.
She was born 13 February 1928 and passed on her 95th birthday on the same day.
Today we celebrate her birthday and this year is particularly special as her portrait is hanging in Bangalow as part of a group show thanks to the lovely Caitlin Reilly. Go and visit Isabella and her friends. It's her birthday.

Strawberry Jammed - 30 x 30 cm - acrylic on canvas. You'll be able to view this painting in person on 1 January .gallery as part of their curated Small Works exhibition.

This painting was part of a colour study series I worked on under the direction of teacher Michelle Dawson while studying during 2025. I'm grateful for Michelle's encouragement, guidance and patience with me. 'Strawberry Jammed', while addressing the red/ green colour scheme became a metaphor for handling delicate relationships. I found the nutcracker at an op shop and spray painted it red to create interest. Gently squeezing the strawberry, creating pressure without damage.

Balanced - Oil and wax on board - 30 x 30cm
This work was inspired by plaster casting that I did with during my first year of study this year. Kat encouraged us to look at the relationships between objects. The plaster holds a softness to it, a sensitivity I didn't expect. Using oil paint mixed with cold wax and only a palette knife I felt that the relationship between these two blocks was carved out on the surface rather than painted. A metaphor for a positive relationship with a partner, awkwardly balanced at times, often a mismatched pair but supportive.

This work is currently available .gallery in Paddington, Brisbane as part of a group exhibition Small Works.
