A big makeover for this 3 piece MCM suite (attributed to Fler but no actual markings)!
There's always a lot more work in these MCM pieces than you'd imagine from seeing them and this suite was no exception!
At some point the 3 seater lounge lost part of it's frame and springs. That had been replaced with plywood. The first part of my job was to figure out the best way to fix this. In consultation with my clients it was decided that elastic webbing would be the best option for the seat foundation but some frame modifications had to be made in order to do this. I removed the inner frame rails (and diagonal corner blocks), denailed them, sanded off the old glue, flipped them over and glued and screwed them to the frame using existing screw holes (that I assume held the plywood on). I recessed these rails slightly so the elastic webbing would sit flush with the outer frame. I then cut and fitted cross braces to prevent the force of the webbing from breaking the frame before adding the webbing, some quilting to cover it and a dust cloth underneath. I changed the backrest cushion configuration from 3 to 2 which is the way these were originally designed. All new foam for the seat and back cushions.
The chairs held some surprises for me too! The metal frame for the seat and back wasn't as expected, with small wings at the top and the backrest frame having side extensions towards the bottom rather than just being a consistent rectangle. After adding springs to the backrests, I had to build up a regular contour back foam piece to fit around the frame (with cut outs for the wings) to get the shape to look uniform all the way down the sides. This foam form was then glued to the steel frame and then covers tailored to fit and then fit over the whole thing which was very difficult to achieve! The front of the seats were also an unusual shape so the spring covers took some extra engineering too! New foam for the seat cushions for the chairs as well.
I think the outcome is excellent and as is often the case, much of the work will never be seen!
