Nickolas Gurtler Office Interior Design + Architecture Studio in Melbourne and Sydney We seek to design spaces that create intrigue and invite curiosity.

Profile

Nickolas Gurtler Office (NGO) is a multi-disciplinary practice of designers, architects and stylists based in Melbourne & Sydney with a commitment to delivering tailored, sophisticated environments. With a commitment to authenticity, luxury and a reverence for history we believe that creativity combined with fine detail creates spaces that are timeless. A boutique group of creative profes

sionals, we believe that design should be immersive, functional, thought-provoking and most importantly - chic.

Whilst we take what we do almost too seriously, we believe in taking our clients on an inclusive design journey together with us - one that is eye-opening, exciting and most importantly - enjoyable.

Capabilities

Led by our principal Nickolas Gurtler, our small team achieves big things. With our multi-disciplinary skillset, we provide interior and architecture services in the residential, multi-residential, commercial, retail and wellness + beauty sectors.

Studio Values

Design, to us, should be transportive, immersive and thought-provoking. Whilst each project is different our studio aesthetic sits at the point of tension between stringent minimalism and absolute glamour, delicately balancing the opposing ideologies together. We call this “restrained glamour”. Our studio has a commitment to authenticity, a reverence for history and a longing to create. We see the design elements and principles as the language of our craft and we utilise, manipulate and transmute them to deliver spaces that are emotive and highly functional to those who experience them.

With a specialisation in the beauty + wellness sector, our firm has a strong commitment to the ritual of beauty and the significance of wellness. Led by our principal Nickolas Gurtler, our small team achieves big things. With our multi-disciplinary skillset, we provide interior and architecture services in the residential, multi-residential, commercial, retail and wellness + beauty sectors. We work on projects across Australia and also take on international projects on a case by case basis.

Architecture + Interior Design

A multi-disciplinary full-service offering, our team work with clients from initial concepts all the way through to a completed project. Our architect and designers develop the entire project holistically for a harmonious finished product. Interior Design

Whether a new build, renovation or commercial endeavour, our interior designers develop the interior spaces from the finishes and fixtures to the joinery and everything in-between. We also enjoy working collaboratively with other architects, branding consultants and landscape designers on projects. Interior Decoration

Working on an existing or newly finished structure, our designers select furniture, lighting, textiles and art into a coalesced and elevated interior experience.

Commercial Design

Working with brands to create an elevated client experience, our designers develop innovative interior environments across the commercial spectrum including retail, hotel, retail and wellness + beauty projects. We also collaborate with experts in branding to deliver fully realised commercial projects. Multi-Residential Interior Design

Working with low-medium density developers, we use impeccable design to create prestigious projects that attract buyers.

We are thrilled to have received the commendation in the retail category of the 40th anniversary colour awards for our project.

A big thank you to our amazing client for your trust and allowing us to push the boundaries, to and all the trades involved in bringing this space to life. Thank you to for capturing the ethereal quality of the space so beautifully. Thank you to the judges and Dulux for this incredible honour. Truly humbling 🙏

What the judges said:

“In this former warehouse, the blurring of retail gallery and studio parallels the owner’s multi-disciplinary practice – part designer, collector, retailer, curator. Thus, Lost Profile Gallery is an ambiguous entity within which the wares for sale are presented more as sculpture than product, to be experienced, enjoyed, rather than acquired and the services offered are done so in spaces conducive to collaboration rather than transaction. In striking this balance, principles of exhibiting are employed, with objects treated like sculpture, displayed sparingly and highlighted individually. Warm, muted neutrals paired with soft textures and fine finishes combine to exude a temple-like aura within which its high-end offerings shine and bespoke design consultations are genuinely undertaken. The showroom-studio was spatially planned as a ‘procession of portals’, titled Dawn, Day and Dusk, ‘framed as states of perception, where light, shadow and form are composed as substance’. Delineating these spaces required intentionally distinct, fearless yet subtle colour, as beautifully restrained in its application as Above The Clouds. Clean, intentional and unified, it presents a new archetype in the retail genre and consequently challenges the commercial norms of retail.”

Featured on today, I’m delighted to share my own home. A place for experimentation, a home for my collection of prototypes, commissions and special things. I’m honoured to be able to share my space with you all.

The energy of a bedroom is so important, and I wanted mine to be about peace, serenity and sweet dreams. Soft linen and Italian silk (a remnant I picked up in Florence many years ago and turned into a cushion) are juxtaposed against tumbled and raw aluminium.

NEW WORK

Featured on today, I’m delighted to share my own home. A place for experimentation, a home for my collection of prototypes, commissions and special things. I’m honoured to be able to share my space with you all.

I transformed the second bedroom, as I often do, into a dining room / study.

I often work from here late into the evenings, but also use it to entertain my nearest and dearest. This room contains many of my most treasured pieces, including a custom Prometheus table lamp I commissioned for my 30th birthday, my USM (a must have for any designer!) and the photograph of Batman by Herb Ritts - a piece with an incredible story.

Read the story beautifully written by on now.

Composed of handmade glazed ceramic tiles, this cabinet was inspired by DNA microarrays: coded fields of colour, repetition and variation that we translated into a piece of furniture specifically for the project. Edition one of one.

Women’s health is becoming an important specialty within our practice, with two more projects currently in development. It’s something we feel incredibly privileged to contribute to. These spaces carry profound personal significance, yet are too often reduced to purely clinical environments. We see design as a way to shift that experience - bringing greater warmth, dignity and emotional intelligence to the places where women receive care.
