Capabilities

Led by our principal Nickolas Gurtler, our small team achieves big things. With our multi-disciplinary skillset, we provide interior and architecture services in the residential, multi-residential, commercial, retail and wellness + beauty sectors.

Studio Values

Design, to us, should be transportive, immersive and thought-provoking. Whilst each project is different our studio aesthetic sits at the point of tension between stringent minimalism and absolute glamour, delicately balancing the opposing ideologies together. We call this “restrained glamour”. Our studio has a commitment to authenticity, a reverence for history and a longing to create. We see the design elements and principles as the language of our craft and we utilise, manipulate and transmute them to deliver spaces that are emotive and highly functional to those who experience them.

With a specialisation in the beauty + wellness sector, our firm has a strong commitment to the ritual of beauty and the significance of wellness. Led by our principal Nickolas Gurtler, our small team achieves big things. It’s a story we hear often. Clients have invested in a beautifully designed home, yet something still doesn’t feel quite right. The architecture is complete, but the spaces lack warmth, personality and the quiet layers that make a house truly feel lived in.

That was exactly the brief for this remarkable Edwardian residence. Rather than reinventing the architecture, we worked in harmony with it, introducing furniture, art and objects that brought warmth, tactility and a more human scale to the monumental interiors.

Rather than filling the home, we were deliberate in what we introduced. A custom travertine coffee table by Tom Fereday anchors the room with its sculptural carved dish, while Australian pieces by Daniel Boddam and Jess Humpston sit comfortably alongside timeless European classics. Together, they create a dialogue between local craftsmanship and international design, with every piece selected for its ability to complement, rather than compete with, the architecture.

The result is a home that feels softer, warmer and deeply collected, without ever losing the quiet confidence of the original design.

Sometimes a home doesn’t need to be redesigned—just thoughtfully completed.

Whether you’re renovating, building with an architect, or simply feel your home is missing that final layer, we’d always be happy to have a conversation.

Harmonia House - Decoration

Upon purchasing this beautifully renovated Edwardian home, our clients felt something was missing. While the architectural shell was elegant, it lacked the warmth, personality and layered character that would make it truly feel like home.

Throughout the home, we introduced carefully considered furniture, lighting, art and objects to soften the architecture and create spaces that felt more personal and collected. In the kitchen, the existing pendant was simply the wrong scale for the cavernous volume of the room. We replaced it with a custom bronze commission, allowing the light to become a sculptural focal point worthy of the space. New Cab stools by Cassina, alongside a carefully curated collection of art and objects, completed the composition, bringing warmth and a sense of lived-in permanence to what had previously felt somewhat impersonal.

Our approach was never to reinvent the architecture, but to complement it. The restrained palette of Tundra marble, white Venetian plaster and warm timbers provided the perfect canvas for thoughtful interventions, allowing each piece to feel as though it had always belonged.

Sometimes a home doesn’t need to be redesigned—just thoughtfully completed.

Whether you’re renovating, building with an architect, or simply feel your home is missing that final layer, we’d always be happy to have a conversation.

Excited to reveal a sneak peek of our latest project - Harmonia House.

Our lovely clients purchased an incredibly special and significant Edwardian home in Melbourne that had been beautifully renovated by the previous owners. Whilst beautiful, it lacked soul, warmth and depth so they engaged us to bring life to their newly purchased home through furniture, art and objects.

Almost like a tiramisu, it’s layered with rich creams, chocolates and biscuit tones - each piece a special commission just for the house.

We cannot wait to share more of this project soon.

Greenwashing. Not a fan.

I’m excited to be part of this very interesting (and sure to be lively) panel discussion with some truly fabulous industry professionals to discuss “sustainability” in the design industry, how it’s become embroiled as marketing speak, what we are doing, what we can be doing.

I’m excited to share my perspective on this vital topic - it’s something I’m incredibly passionate about. What to expect from me? I’ll be calling out one-dimensional approaches, box ticking efforts, and exposing “green” decisions that are actually not green at all. I’ll also be discussing our approach to consumption, practical effects we take and much more juicy info. As per usual expect some sassy one-liners too 😎

Please join us for this important discussion, I’m really excited to be a part of this panel and hope to see you there. It also includes a special opportunity to tour the immersive RE:BORN exhibition by Cultivated and Romance Was Born.

Thursday 16th July, 6pm start. Tickets can be found in the AUTHENTIC DESIGN ALLIANCE® bio or at Humanitix.

Thank you to Artbank for hosting, AMS for inviting me to be a part of it, and to my colleagues Aleesha Callahan Joshua Ellis

Dr Fatima Khan - Women’s Health

In late 2023, Dr. Fatima Khan approached us with a singular vision: to reimagine a menopause clinic as a space of empowerment, one that incorporates design as part of medical treatment. She sought to make a bold statement, breaking down the stigma of this vital issue in our society.

Dr. Khan, familiar with our commercial work at the intersection of medicine and beauty, sought our unique ability to integrate luxurious residential elements into medical spaces-environments historically devoid of thoughtful design.
Traditional medical environments-clinical, sterile, and often dehumanizing-reinforce the false notion that menopause is something to be “fixed.” Dr. Khan’s philosophy, that hormone health is mental health, directly informed our design approach.

It’s been fantastic to see this project well received and to spark conversation around how design can influence a patient experience.

We’re thrilled to be working on two new women’s health projects in Melbourne - stay tuned.

We are thrilled to have received the commendation in the retail category of the 40th anniversary colour awards for our project.

A big thank you to our amazing client for your trust and allowing us to push the boundaries, to and all the trades involved in bringing this space to life. Thank you to for capturing the ethereal quality of the space so beautifully. Thank you to the judges and Dulux for this incredible honour. Truly humbling 🙏

What the judges said:

“In this former warehouse, the blurring of retail gallery and studio parallels the owner’s multi-disciplinary practice – part designer, collector, retailer, curator. Thus, Lost Profile Gallery is an ambiguous entity within which the wares for sale are presented more as sculpture than product, to be experienced, enjoyed, rather than acquired and the services offered are done so in spaces conducive to collaboration rather than transaction. In striking this balance, principles of exhibiting are employed, with objects treated like sculpture, displayed sparingly and highlighted individually. Warm, muted neutrals paired with soft textures and fine finishes combine to exude a temple-like aura within which its high-end offerings shine and bespoke design consultations are genuinely undertaken. The showroom-studio was spatially planned as a ‘procession of portals’, titled Dawn, Day and Dusk, ‘framed as states of perception, where light, shadow and form are composed as substance’. Delineating these spaces required intentionally distinct, fearless yet subtle colour, as beautifully restrained in its application as Above The Clouds. Clean, intentional and unified, it presents a new archetype in the retail genre and consequently challenges the commercial norms of retail.”

Buster Caldwell, judge.
