One of the challenges of working with plantation Aussie hardwoods is the huge amount of growth stress that can be present in the logs, particularly smaller diameter trees from overstocked lots. I thought it would be interesting to play around with it and see if I could use that growth stress to produce some of the curved timber that we framers love so much. The curve in this brace ended up being super subtle but still a fun concept that I’ll continue experimenting with.

Stoked on these holdfasts made by musician and blacksmith extraordinaire . I milled him a lump of blackbutt to serve as a base for one of his anvils and in return he made me a pair of these holdfasts. Made from spring steel they are extremely effective at holding down work pieces. Gotta love the barter system!
