After Hurricane Matthew hit Florida in 2016, one man went two days without hearing from his 87-year-old grandmother.
Her power was out.
Her phone was not working.
And he had no idea if she was okay.
Eric Olsen lived more than 1,000 miles away in Nebraska and tried getting help from police and emergency services.
But they were overwhelmed.
So he came up with a last-resort idea.
He ordered her a pizza.
Not because she was hungry.
Because he needed someone to physically reach her house.
Eric placed a Papa John’s order and asked the delivery driver to call him when he arrived.
About 30 minutes later, the driver reached the house.
Eric’s grandmother opened the door.
And the driver put his cellphone to her ear.
For the first time in two days, Eric heard her voice.
She was alive.
She was safe.
Eric later joked:
“Police and fire couldn’t do it, but Papa John’s got there in 30 minutes and put the cellphone to her ear.”
Sometimes a pizza delivery is a lot more than a pizza delivery.
