Why White is never just White
Have you ever stood in front of a wall of white paint swatches and felt completely overwhelmed - unsure where to even begin - only to realise that white is never just white?
In reality, “white” isn’t a single, pure colour. It’s a spectrum of subtle variations that shift depending on their surroundings. Most white paints carry undertones - traces of yellow, blue, red, or grey - which is why one white can feel warm and creamy, while another appears crisp or even slightly cool.
Lighting plays a huge role as well. Natural daylight, artificial lighting, and the direction a room faces can all change how white is perceived throughout the day. Surroundings matter just as much - flooring, furniture, and adjacent colours can reflect onto surfaces, altering how the paint reads in your space.
Choosing the right white isn’t about finding the “best” one - it’s about finding the one that works in harmony with your environment. A shade that looks perfect in a showroom can feel completely different once applied at home. If you are still unsure, try painting a large sample board of your top contenders and move them around the space to see how the colour shifts and interacts with light and materials.
White paint is never just white paint - it’s a subtle but powerful design decision that shapes the entire feel of a space.
