~ Ceramic Kea Skull Sculpture ~

Made from mid-fire clay, and decorated with underglaze and porcelain paint. Handmade by me.

I met a few Kea’s in New Zealand a few years back. They’re so cheeky, and make such interesting sounds.

I used a mix of photo references and 3D scans of actual bird skulls to hand sculpt this piece, taking artistic liberties here and there. This piece took approximately 30 hours of work.

Available on the website for purchase x

~ New Work: Ceramic Bird Skulls ~

I used a mix of photo references and 3D scans of actual bird skulls to hand sculpt these pieces, taking artistic liberties here and there.

I stepped outside of my experience to make these, and I’m so happy that I did.

For this round, I chose to make an Australian Magpie, an Australian Emu, a New Zealand Kea, and a Crow (non-specific region).

They’re all Individually formed using hand building techniques. Created in my home, and fired at my local community kiln.

~ Memento Mori ~

Over the past few years, as people in my life have inevitably passed, I’ve become more drawn to the question of what it means to die, or to be dead, and how we reconcile the death of those we love, while we are still living.

Memento Mori (“remember, you must die”) is a Latin phrase that seeks to reminds us that life is temporary, transitory, and once.

Though a lot of people prefer not to think of death, particularly after experiencing loss, I’ve personally found it to be therapeutic; both for processing grief, and for confronting my own mortality.

I’ve focused on birds skulls in particular for a few reasons.

I find the external visibility of their beaks very interesting aesthetically – the way they’re connected to their skulls makes which bird you’re looking at in death recognisable – unlike other animals, which are more ambiguous (including us).

The second reason is that it really is true: bird watching does creep up on you as you get older.

A family of five Magpie’s hang out in front of our house, and our local cemetery is filled with Crows; Minor Birds, Black Birds, Little Wattle Birds and Pigeon’s fly in and out of our backyard all day. I see birds, both dead and alive, all the time. It made sense to recognise them this way.

And the third reason: birds are the descendants of dinosaurs. That they exist alongside us is a reminder that, despite death not being optional, vestiges of us remain – transmuted into other forms x

~ Monty, the cat skull ~

Earlier in the year, after seeing another piece I was working on, my sister asked if I could make her a cat skull. Here he is, finally finished. She’s decided to name him Monty, after our childhood cat.

He’s hand sculpted; I used photo references of two different domestic cat skulls to make him. I also took some liberties – he’s bigger than the average cat, and doesn’t have back teeth.

Mending the cracks in the drying clay was definitely a challenge, and he emerged from his final firing with peeling underglaze. Though this was initially disappointing, I ended up crackling off the sections that didn’t make it, and layering on porcelain paint. It’s produced what looks like intentional deterioration, which I’m embracing as a happy accident. It definitely adds to the realism of the piece.

If this work is up your alley, keep an eye on the website, and sign up to the newsletter! You’ll be seeing a few more of these sculptures from me very soon, and unlike this one, they’ll be available for purchase x

Chamomile & Agave

Reintroducing my botanical incense blends 🕯️

Sweet hay, crisp air, apples in the warm sun. Calmative, herbaceous, floral.

This is my first incense blend made with a tincture. I went through a pretty obsessive tincture making phase in 2021/22, and though I made many, the most rewarding one ended up being the chamomile pictured here. It was also my first time adding agave to a combustible incense blend.

This is my personal favourite in the shop. If you’re a chamomile fan, I think it will be yours too x

Intensity: gentle, ephemeral.

Each stick burns for approximately 25 minutes.

You can find it, and others, on my website. Ships by (or before) Dec 11, just in time for the holidays x

Ylang Ylang & Orris Root

Reintroducing my botanical incense blends 🕯️

Muted florals, night air; sensuous, earthy, soft.

My first blend to include a floral note.

It puts me in mind of night blooming flowers, warm air, and sitting pool-side.

Scent is very subjective; there isn’t a right or wrong in terms of what you experience. One lovely customer told me this blend reminds her of time spent with her grandmother, and the Australian bush!

Intensity: gentle, lasting.

Each stick burns for approximately 25 minutes.

~ Oak Moss & Vetiver ~

Reintroducing my botanical incense blends 🕯️

This one is all about forest floor petrichor, subtle perfume, green moss, dry grass, and wet earth.

If we know each other in real-life, you know I tend to hyper focus on detail.

Though this trait can at times be frustrating (for me, and others), the positive-twist is that being very particular can produce thoughtful results!

Vetiver is a heavy ingredient. Used sparingly it can feel beautifully light, but too much is very quickly overwhelming. I spent a lot of time testing this with my (very patient) housemates before launching it.

I would say that while it remains gentle, it is a deeper, longer lasting scent than the two that precede it.

It’s tied for the most reviewed blend in the shop! The other is Black Storax and Clove x

Reintroducing my botanical incense blends 🕯️

Cinnamon and Spruce is fresh, with light spice; like warm woods after rain.

It’s not in the title, but the frankincense in this one really lifts the final scent, and brings the cinnamon and spruce together. It was the last ingredient I added to this blend that made me feel like ~ yes, that’s the one. It went through 11 versions to get there!

Intensity: gentle, ephemeral.

Each stick burns for approximately 25 minutes.

~ Black Storax & Clove ~

Reintroducing my botanical incense blends 🕯️

Black Storax and Clove was the first incense blend I finalised, back in 2020. It’s woody, floral, with hints of cola and clove – a bit like a softly spiced vanilla Coke.

It’s one of my favourites to make, and is tied for the most reviewed blend in the shop! The other is Oak Moss and Vetiver 😊

Intensity: gentle, ephemeral.

Each stick burns for approximately 25 minutes.
