I’ve been in a transitional phase in more ways than one lately, one of those being moving house and therefore being away from a lot of my usual materials while doing so. As a result; however, I’ve been enjoying some quiet moments with my sketchbook—which is now becoming filled with many of the synaethestic ways I often experience the world.

Fun fact: while there are many Autistic artists who are hyperphantastic; defined as the ability to easily hold & recreate images from the minds eye, there are ALSO many of us who are aphantastic and process things in far more abstract ways. I can’t close my eyes, recall a clear image of an apple, and then draw it. But I can feel and “see” energetically on an intense level. This is because aphantasia is also linked to high levels of synaesthesia. Synaethesia and abstraction are how my brain processes things. It’s not better or worse than other ways of processing or creating—it’s just different.

Welcome to Bad Acid Art! 'Sid' aka Orion Willow is a trans, mixed Black artist who's work is rooted in Afro-futurist/surrealist themes to depict the ways in which everything exists in a state of sacred flux. Orion’s lived experience of Neurodivergence lends itself to a unique lens in which he views the world, with these observations reflected in their work. Bad Acid Art was born from a personal need to express that which often cannot be put into words.

This practice has become a staple form of therapy which both grounds and connects to the liminal spaces we all occupy between past, present, and future. It is a means of worshipping the paradox. Each work is born from a conversation with Self and is a love letter to everyone who dares to dream big and live weird.
