A great heritage home starts in the hallway.

It’s the first space that welcomes you home. The first glimpse of the architecture and of what’s to come.

Yet it’s often treated as nothing more than somewhere to pass through.

A beautiful hallway sets the rhythm for the entire home. The flooring draws you forward. The lighting creates atmosphere. The original details tell the story before you’ve even stepped into the other spaces.

When you get the hallway right, everything that follows feels more intentional.

It’s one of my favourite spaces to design because it asks for restraint. You don’t need to fill it. You simply need to let it lead.

I think the best period homes begin the moment you open the front door.

What I’m sourcing this week: Indigenous Art

I worked with a client last year who had an extensive collection of Indigenous art, and I’ve enjoyed discovering the artists ever since.

There’s something about the bold colour, geometry and sense of movement in these works that I keep coming back to. They’d feel just as at home in a Victorian terrace as they would in a contemporary apartment.

Design moves that make heritage homes unforgettable.

✺ At least one moody room
Drenched in colour. An amazing sofa. Somewhere to disappear with a book or a negroni.

✺ Not another chevron floor
There are so many more beautiful ways to lay timber.

✺ Let rooms have one job
Commit to the purpose of a room and let it do one thing beautifully.

✺ Black steel windows had a good run
Let’s move on! Heritage homes can handle colour.

✺ Don’t waste period details
Let them be the hero, not the background.

One question I hear a lot is ‘Where should the old end and the new begin?’

Should the cornices continue into the extension? Should the skirting boards match? Should the new feel exactly like the original house?

The truth is, there isn’t a formula.

Of course, I believe in celebrating the original details that give a heritage home its character. But I don’t think every new space needs to imitate the old.

Instead, I think the better question is: How do you want your home to feel?

Sometimes that means creating a clear distinction between old and new. Sometimes it means weaving them together so seamlessly that one flows into the other.

Neither approach is right or wrong.

The homes I love most don’t succeed because they’ve perfectly copied the past.

They succeed because every decision supports the same feeling throughout the home.

We often think creating a home we love starts with a renovation.

Sometimes it does.

But some of the biggest transformations happen after the builders have left.

The homes I remember aren’t memorable because they have the biggest kitchen or the most expensive finishes.

They’re memorable because of how they feel.

It’s the sofa you can’t wait to sink into at the end of the day. The rug you invested in and love every time you walk into the room. The dining table where family and friends gather. The lighting that completely changes the mood. The artwork that tells your story.

Those final layers are what turn a house into a home.

We spend so much time waiting for the ‘right time’ to create the home we’ve imagined. But maybe there’s another way to think about it. You don’t have to wait to love where you live.
