Stopped at the 4 hour mark painting myself from a mirror. The previous images are at 2.5hrs 1hr and 30 minutes. I absolutely hate painting myself but live sitters are like gold in my world so I have relented.

I only used two colours and white, though tempted to grab another. Again I resisted.

The PAOTY Facebook group challenge this week was to paint/draw yourself in 3 different mediums. I have an oil and a pencil study so far. All I could think about was how old I look now! 🤦‍♀️

I came across a painting by one of my favourite Australian artists, Tom Roberts at auction and couldn’t resist in making a quick master copy. Who knows if I’d ever see it again once sold? I certainly don’t have the estimated 50-70k needed to acquire it, but can learn from the master for free with a pencil drawing. Children are difficult to draw and this was no exception. Not as challenging as one I have repainted in pastel about 10 times over the last 3 days in my studio this week. I’m still not happy. I have no reference so struggling to make it work from memory. Unfortunately I may need go bin that one tomorrow… but keep studying in the hope of growth.

10 minute sketch & 20 minute.
Drawing is the backbone of good art in my opinion. Without that skill one is very limited. I see great improvement in my own work when I sketch more, which I’m doing now. Even short bursts of time regularly help. Some are crappy and some make me wonder what else we I create with more time. Not one was a waste of time.

11 days ago I put my sketchbook next to my lounge chair to do some quick sketching and have done 37 portraits. I can see already a jump in my understanding and wonder where I’d be now if I had been sketching more!
