Christopher Boots

Christopher Boots Material and metaphysical exploration since 11-11-11. The Christopher Boots studio was founded on the principle of “Fiat Lux”: Let there be Light.

Established 11-11-11 through metaphysical and material exploration of quartz crystal, the studio gave birth to creating lighting with a signature aesthetic: exploring relationships between nature, architecture, symbology, geometry and geology, offering contemporary interpretations of structure, symmetry and pattern. All works are handmade with love and care by a diverse team of skilled artisans. C

ollaborations with glass blowers, bronze foundries, sculptors, metal smiths and stone masons ensure a commitment to quality, underscoring an investigative sensibility, giving birth to a series of illuminating collections both alluring and unexpectedly visceral. The studio designs, prototypes and builds in Melbourne, Australia, honouring traditional elements of form, proportion and scale, marrying traditional and cutting edge materials with various techniques, creating future collectibles designed for transforming architecture. The work of the studio has been displayed at Hermès, Rossana Orlandi, National Gallery of Victoria, Parliament House, Cassina, amongst countless private collections in New York, Dubai, Tokyo, Moscow and Paris. Collaborating with architects, interior designers and private clients fuels the dialogue between worlds we all transverse.

ABACUS by Christopher Boots

Inspired by the ancient tool of balance and calculation, ABACUS is a sculptural study in proportion, material, and light. Faceted quartz is suspended along a refined horizontal beam, creating a composition of rhythm, tension, and harmony.

As light diffuses through the stone, the piece transforms the atmosphere around it — bringing warmth, depth, and quiet architectural presence to the space.

Each piece is assembled by hand at the studio in Melbourne, Australia, with configurations tailored to the scale and intent of each project.

Now on view at YDF Interiors.

For designers, architects, and collectors looking to introduce statement pieces with true artistic presence into their projects — our team is ready to assist with specification, sourcing, and integration.

MILAN: A LIVING ARCHIVE

As this year’s Milan Design Week draws to a close, we’re reflecting on five Christopher Boots presentations across the fair between 2017 and 2024.

From group exhibitions and international recognition, to TROVE with Lost Profile Studio and our first solo showcase, CRUX, Milan has been an important part of the studio’s international story.

These chapters continue to inform our evolving practice and dialogue with the wider design world.

SMOKY QUARTZ

Smoky quartz begins as clear quartz. Its colour emerges later, through natural irradiation from surrounding rock interacting with trace elements within the crystal. Over millennia, clarity deepens into smoke, ranging from pale, tea-like tones to near-black translucency.

Despite its depth, smoky quartz retains the internal order of quartz. Light still moves through it, slowed, softened, tempered, but not obscured.

In our work, it holds light with greater density, creating a presence distinct from clear quartz. It also enables a gradient from clear to smoke, carefully composed stone by stone.

Smoky quartz is shaped by exposure, time, pressure, and proximity to the earth around it. No two pieces are the same. This natural irregularity is a quality to be sought out. When handled with care, it gives each work its own atmosphere and identity.

Smoky quartz and gradient compositions are available across a number of Christopher Boots works. Get in touch to discuss your project.

FORM, FOUND

Karl Blossfeldt believed that the fundamental forms of art and architecture already exist in nature; our task is simply to recognise their logic.
In 1928, he published a collection of plant studies that allowed his students to do just that.

Through extreme magnification, stems and buds revealed columns, spirals, joints, and lattices almost indistinguishable from designed objects. Structures once attributed to human invention, now recognised as something older. Discovered, not designed.

Certain forms resonate with us on a level more felt than understood;
often because they belong to an order larger than ourselves.

ENDURING FORM

Our most valued possessions are rarely the newest. They are the ones whose meaning has gathered slowly across time.

Our long-standing client had lived with their Christopher Boots pieces for over a decade before reimagining their Melbourne home. Despite a substantial transformation of the space, they insisted their pieces remain part of the home’s next evolution.

PROMETHEUS I, PHASMIDA and ORP now inhabit the refurbished home with renewed life. Their meaning deepened through change.

Every Christopher Boots piece is conceived as a future heirloom. Intended to be retained, not replaced.

ASTRAL GUIDE

CRUX draws from one of the most familiar formations in the southern sky, the Southern Cross. A constellation used for millennia to orient, navigate, and understand position within space.

Its composition aligns to the proportions of its namesake. Delicate, undulating blown glass luminas nest within faceted sand-cast brass cups – a measured tension between fluidity and structure. A warm glow recalls the distant, shifting light of the night sky.

CRUX stands as a testament to astral navigation, reflecting our enduring connection with the stars.

Places of gathering, two centuries apart.

Circles represent gathering.
A shared centre. Continuity. No beginning and no end.

SERENITY

Central Arizona carries a distinct geological presence; defined by exposed sandstone, long horizons, and a clarity of light.

Sedona Serenity by Stephanie Larsen Interiors responds with a quiet, material-led approach that allows the surrounding landscape to remain the dominant force.

ABACUS anchors one of the home’s key outlooks, aligning the dining space with the red rock terrain beyond.

HIGHER LOVE

Alexandra Kidd is a Sydney-based interior designer and long-time collaborator of the studio.

While her projects are always deeply considered, Higher Love is particularly personal. It is her own home.

"The laundry space was designed to feel contemplative and dramatic. Prometheus III was selected long before any other fixtures; it set the mood from the beginning."
— Alexandra Kidd

Before the moon could be photographed with clarity, its surface had to be modelled in order to be understood.

In the 1870s, astronomer James Nasmyth translated his telescopic observations into detailed plaster reliefs, revealing a terrain of crater, ridge and scar.

For most of human history, our relationship with the moon was shaped by distance, story and imagination. Through careful observation and making, figures like Nasmyth brought it closer, transforming imagination into knowledge.

Meaningful understanding is often earned through making, not observation alone.

THALASSA

A study in natural ageing. Verdigris is copper’s memory of salt air: the patina of time and atmosphere made visible. Polished brass yields to weathered beauty; imperfect quartz crystals complete the shift.

Named for the primordial goddess of the deep sea, THALASSA carries the presence of something shaped by forces older than design.

PROMETHEUS III THALASSA 1200 and 2100 are part of the GENESIS collection. Each is the only work of its kind and available to view by appointment.

HELICTITE

A geological crystalline growth at an intimate tabletop scale. The bloom recalls rare horizontal formations that twist and branch in subterranean darkness, appearing to grow against gravity itself.

HELICTITE 450 and 300 are part of the GENESIS collection, each produced in a limited series of three. A small number remain available to view by appointment.

AETHER

A new expression that carries the transition from density to clarity further than before. Cast brass crystalline forms emerge at the upper reaches of the formation, marking an elemental shift where mineral dissolves into metal.

Named for the primordial god of the upper air. The pure, luminous atmosphere breathed only by the gods.

STALACTITE is the first form to carry AETHER.
450mm and 300mm pendants are part of the GENESIS collection. Both are the only ones of their kind.

VANITAS

A moon-like surface, rivers of crater and vein, preserves the moment of transformation from molten bronze to solid.

Each piece begins as a hand-poured mould that burns away after casting. One mould. One work. Never repeated.

VANITAS debuts within GENESIS at Melbourne Art Fair. On view today and tomorrow.
