The World on a Plate: Meatball Edition
Episode 1 : Sri Lankan Chicken Meatball Curry 🇱🇰
Golden, juicy chicken meatballs simmered in a rich, creamy curry – straight from our island kitchen to your screen. 💜🍛
📝 Ingredients
For the meatballs:
• 500g chicken mince
• 1 small red onion, finely chopped
• 2 green chilies, chopped (optional)
• 2 garlic cloves, minced
• 1 tsp ginger, grated
• 1 tsp Sri Lankan roasted curry powder
• ½ tsp chilli powder
• ½ tsp turmeric
• Salt & pepper to taste
• 1 egg
• 2 tbsp breadcrumbs (optional)
For the curry:
• 2 tbsp coconut oil
• 1 small onion, sliced
• 2 garlic cloves, sliced
• 1 sprig curry leaves
• 1 tsp cumin seeds
• 1 tsp curry powder
• ½ tsp chili powder
• ¼ tsp turmeric
• 1 small cinnamon stick
• ½ cup thick coconut milk
• ¾ cup thin coconut milk
• Salt to taste
• Squeeze of lime juice
🍳 Instructions
1. Make the meatballs:
• In a bowl, mix all meatball ingredients well.
• Form into small balls.
• Lightly fry in oil, air-fry or bake until golden (they’ll finish cooking in the curry).
2. Prepare the curry base:
• Heat coconut oil. Add cumin seeds.
• Add onion, garlic, green chili, and curry leaves. Sauté until golden.
• Add cinnamon, curry powder, turmeric, and chili powder. Stir until fragrant.
3. Cook the curry:
• Add thin coconut milk and salt. Let it come to a boil.
• Add meatballs and simmer on low for 10–12 minutes.
• Pour in thick coconut milk and simmer another 5 minutes until slightly thickened.
• Finish with a squeeze of lime juice.
🍚 Serving Suggestions
• Serve hot with steamed rice, roti, string hoppers, or roast paan.
• Garnish with coriander or extra curry leaves for presentation.
