Alexa Kempton, who chairs the Houses Awards jury, said last year that architects increasingly tell clients, “You don’t need more space, you need better design.” It matches what I see on plans.

Two homes with the same square metres can live completely differently. What decides it is how the plan works day to day: an easy flow from indoors to outdoors, a drop zone off the main entry or garage, living areas that are zoned but still open, and flexibility for working from home, guests or multi-generational living.

I’m also seeing more people choose a fitness or wellness space over a formal living room that just collects dust.

This is what our 3D Design Blueprint looks like.

One home, from the entry and formal living area through to the kitchen and butler’s pantry, a double void living space with a feature staircase, the home theatre (and yes, a popcorn bar), and upstairs the study nook, rumpus area and master bedroom.

It all starts with a floor plan and a pile of inspiration, and ends with a design that feels cohesive and like you. You see the design, and every decision, before it’s locked in.

10 years in business. A lot of that time was spent figuring things out the hard way.

Early on I said yes to almost everything that came through referrals. It built a client base fast, which I needed at the time, but it also meant I wasn’t always working with people or projects that actually lit me up.

The shift happened when I started putting myself out there properly. Not just finished projects, but my actual process, my opinions, the way I think through a space. Once people could see that, the clients who found me were genuinely aligned, and the work got better because of it.

I also had to stop being everything to everyone. Trial and error eventually showed me the type of client and the type of project I actually do my best work for, and I built my process around that instead of trying to be generalist.

Nobody tells you about the other side of working for yourself either. No boss, no 9-to-5 structure to lean on, just you figuring out how to stay motivated and organised day after day.

If ten years has taught me anything, it’s that the earlier you get clarity, the less you pay for figuring it out later. That applies to running a business. It applies just as much to building a home.

Function and budget before trends. Notice what you’re actually drawn to, not what’s popular right now. Build in room for your life to change. And don’t let someone else’s opinion make the final call.

Before you finalise your kitchen island, here’s everything actually worth thinking about.

Size the island to the slab if you want no join at all. If it needs to be bigger, choose exactly where that join lands, don’t let it fall wherever the slab happens to run out.

The sink doesn’t have to go in the island. Putting it on the back bench keeps the island clear for seating and prep, and keeps a wet, messy zone out of the main sightline.

Decide how many people you actually want seated before you design the island. If you want a feature stone block on one end, it reduces the seating capacity, and might only fit 3, not your family of 5.

A waterfall edge is worth keeping if the stone has real movement and the island is the centrepiece of an open plan space. Skip it if the stone is plain and you want your contrasting cabinetry to be the feature instead.

Double-sided cabinetry sounds great until you realise it needs a deeper island and more floor space around it. Only works if you actually have the room to spare.

A recessed, shadow-line kick makes the whole island look like it’s floating. Fluted or reeded end panels add texture without adding colour, and hide fingerprints far better than a flat face does.

An island is never just a benchtop. It’s seven or eight decisions stacked on top of each other.

Before you sign off on your floor plan, ask yourself three things.

1. How do you actually live in this space day to day? Not how you imagine you will. What actually happens here on a Tuesday morning, a Friday night, a Sunday afternoon?

2. Are you designing for a trend or for yourself? Would you still love this in five years?

3. Will this layout still work if life changes? Plan for flexibility, because the way you use your spaces will shift as your family grows. Small tweaks now are cheap. Major changes after the slab is poured are not.

A floor plan can look finished and still not suit the way you live. These three questions catch that before it’s built.

This palette is for the home that wants to feel earthy, natural and warm.

Travertine, terracotta, and olive. Travertine does the grounding, a warm neutral stone that ages well and never feels cold. Terracotta brings the point of warmth and texture, whether it’s a tile, a plaster finish, or just an accent detail. Olive rounds it out, an earthy tone that ties everything together.

None of these are new materials. They just work, together, in a way that still feels current.

Save this if you’re drawn to a warm, earthy palette.

A butler’s pantry can add up to 30% to your kitchen install cost, and you don’t always need one.

Sculleries are 2026’s most-requested kitchen add-on in Australia, with HIA pricing one at $8,000 to $25,000.

Worth it if you’re hiding daily mess from an open-plan living space, actually have the footprint to spare, and entertain enough that the main kitchen needs to look guest ready.

Not worth it if the only reason is “everyone has one” and you’re cooking alone most nights.

A lot of the same benefit comes from better bench depth, a proper appliance cupboard, or one wall of tall pantry joinery, at a fraction of the cost.

Put the budget into the room you’re actually living in, not the one you’re hiding from guests twice a year.

The tile grout colour nobody thinks about until it's too late.

Weeks agonising over a tile. Then grout gets picked in about ten seconds which is usually whatever the tiler's holding that day. And yet grout is doing more work than people give it credit for.

The same tile reads completely differently depending on the grout next to it. A matching grout lets the tile disappear into one continuous surface. A contrasting grout turns every single tile into its own visible shape.

Once it's grouted, there's no redo. Nobody's pulling up a bathroom floor because the grout didn't turn out how they pictured it.

A client’s first reaction to seeing her house in 3D for the first time: “It is so amazing to see the house come to light.”

Before that moment, all she had was scattered inspiration. Ideas she liked individually but couldn’t picture together. A floor plan on paper that she’d stared at so many times she could probably draw it from memory, but still couldn’t quite see as a real place.

Then she saw the first design concept, and her exact words were: “It is so amazing to see the house come to light. We think you have done such a great job of capturing our thoughts.”

That’s honestly my favourite part of this job. Not the render. The second she went from imagining her home to actually seeing it, and it finally felt like hers.

That’s the whole job, really.

The safest kitchen colour scheme might be costing you the one thing you actually wanted. A home that feels like yours.

All-white, project-home palettes sell the fastest. Broad appeal, easy for anyone to picture their own life in it. Nobody's arguing with that.

But selling fast and feeling like you are two completely different jobs, and most people get handed the first brief by default, whether or not it's the one they actually need.

That trade-off makes complete sense for an investment. Minimal risk, widest pool of buyers, exactly what you want when you're not the one living there. A forever home is a different brief entirely.

You don't need to blow up the whole palette to fix this. One considered, slightly braver choice per room usually does it. A stone with real character. A cabinetry colour that isn't the safest thing on the sample board.

You're not renovating to impress a buyer who doesn't exist yet. You're building the home you're actually going to live in.
