Let’s address the elephant in the room… 🐘

Coming from someone who was on-air TV designer, I know how hard it is to put reality renovation show together. Been there, done that, got the feature in TV week 😆

That said, I have to take issue with something almost all the reno shows do.

They’re not honest about the real cost to renovate, design and style a home.

The spend they show on-screen to redesign a space is hilariously low, doesn’t include any labour costs, nor are they clear enough about disclosing the sponsorships/freebies.

And then you have the other shows, where homeowners are told that their tiny budget can reno an entire home when in the real world they might get one bathroom completed.

The lack of transparency is such a disservice to the viewer. And then they come to a designer with a completely unrealistic budget (and it’s on me to burst their bubble). Or they try to do it themselves and get a very rude awakening.

Why do you think this is? Why is cost transparency such forbidden territory? 🤷🏻‍♂️

This is the hill i’ll die on…

And, look, I don’t always get my way on this one. Sometimes my interior designer clients push back.

But this is my personal non negotiable: a bedroom has to have carpet!

There, I said it!!!

Hard flooring in a bedroom: cold and clinical 🥶
Carpet in a bedroom: warm and welcoming 🥰

I have made some hard-flooring bedrooms look and feel amazing with floor rugs, of course, but my preference is always carpet all day every day, 24/7, 365.

Fight me on this one but you won’t change my mind 😎

You won’t understand this unless you have designer OCD like me.

The first image: a beautiful, sleek, minimalist console table sitting pretty in my clients entry. Looking gorgeous. No notes 🖤

Second picture: taken front on. And here’s where the OCD comes in. Everything looks beautifully centered, except for the pendant light in the room behind me 🤦🏻

Like Beyonce in ‘Irreplaceable’ it’s to the left, to the left.

This is going to haunt me forever. I’ll never know true peace.

If you get it, you get it.

There’s an illness sweeping the country, and you’re probably suffering from it 🥴

It’s what we call WWS: White Wall Syndrome.

WWS is best described as a strong, underlying desire to change your white walls, but feeling too scared and anxious to take the plunge.

The cure is exposure therapy, so let me expose you to the white wall I transformed for my design clients here in Melbourne.

We ditched the blankness in this living room in favour of a custom-designed wall with moody blue paint, acoustic panelling, floating shelves and some stunner pendant lights.

I hope this inspires you to get moving on curing your own WWS. And if you need a pro to go on the journey with you, i’m here and ready to get your remedy sorted.

I promise, it won’t hurt a bit 😉

Design rule #765 you better not be breaking 🫣⬇️

It’s my firm belief that your main bedroom and ensuite need to have a relationship. Not the MAFS kind either, more a sharing of similar vibes.

Swipe across and you’ll see what I mean.

Colour is the easiest way to do it. A bedroom wall colour replicated in a bathroom tile is a nice way to connect the two zones.

It can be something far simpler and less permanent, too!

A quilt cover set or an artwork in your bedroom, and then that same colour represented in the towels in your bathroom.

Are you doing this at your place? Do you feel like the two zones speak to one another, feel connected, and that cohesion has been achieved?

If not, you know what you need to do 😉

“I wouldn’t have done that in my living room”.

We all say it, right? But if you only knew the journey a room goes on when you’re designing with a client.

And that is the goal, right? A happy client. A good looking room. A space that functions well for those who live in it. And, a client who feels their life has improved because of your work.

Most importantly: we don’t design for the masses. By that I mean, we deliver every client THEIR dream space. We don’t repeat the same style over and over. No cookie cutters here baby! 🚫

Scroll across from the tale of this living room. What started out as a bit of a cold canvas got a soothing, feminine feel applied to it. With some easy sophistication, of course. We always deliver that.
