Facts!

We spend so much time teaching our daughters to be careful. Don’t walk alone. Watch your drink. Text when you get home. Stay with your friends. Protect yourself.

But where is the same energy when we raise our sons?

Teach them about consent. Teach them that intoxication is not consent. Teach them to respect women. Teach them to speak up when their friends cross a line. Teach them that being a ‘good man’ also means holding other men accountable. I’m so lucky Elora’s dad is one of these good men, but sadly they’re not all good men. It’s true that most attackers are men attacking women.

I have a daughter. Of course I’ll teach her how to keep herself safe.

But I desperately want her to grow up in a world where we put just as much effort into raising boys she doesn’t need protecting from.
