For those who are not aware, a coir door mat is made from coconuts! Firstly a villager has to climb a palm tree to cut down at least 38 coconuts. Then another has to de husk the coconut. Then another bashes it to make a fibre. These fibres are taken to another part of the village for the artisan to spin the fibres to make the yarn. Once the yarn is spun its then taken to another part of the village to be woven into the mat. The artisan can only weave five in a day.
So truly a handicraft!
