We’re excited to share an initial concept design for our residential project in southern Tasmania.

The home includes a main dwelling and separate guest quarters, connected by a glazed hallway. A mezzanine study offers a light-filled retreat for focused work and reflection.

Constructed primarily from locally sourced timber, the design is rooted in sustainability, with every decision made in respect for the land and local community. Floor-to-ceiling operable glazing frames sweeping views of the Tasman Sea while seamlessly extending the living space into the outdoors.

It’s a space to nurture, connect, and create. We look forward to sharing more as the project unfolds.

Site analysis for new residential project in Abbotsford

Early stage thinking for a new home in Abbotsford, with a focus on connection, context, and comfort.

Proximity pros
Excellent road and public transport access.
Just 10 mins to the CBD by train, 20 by bus.
25 mins walk to the MCG.
Surrounded by great local amenities - Yarra Trail, Abbotsford Convent, MCG, and a vibrant restaurant scene.

Key considerations
Mitigating noise and vibration from the adjacent train line.
Maximising northern light and solar access.
Capturing views of the CBD and a beautiful mature eucalyptus to the north.
Reducing exposure to air pollutants from trains and nearby Hoddle Street.

More to come as this one develops.

Survey to screen

The next step in the process is to create a precise 3d model of the building or interior, using data captured during the architectural survey. From this model, we extract accurate plans and elevations to produce a comprehensive set of “As Existing Conditions” drawings.

These drawings serve as the foundation for all design decisions and form part of the contract documentation used by builders and main contractors during the tender and construction phases.

With this reliable base in place, we can begin exploring design possibilities, whether it’s opening up spaces, retaining key features, or reimagining the layout entirely. Thoughtful, informed design begins with a clear understanding of the existing space.

Concept design - Southern Tasmania

A first look at our evolving residential project, inspired by the humble fisherman’s cottage, re imagined for contemporary, sustainable living.

Design Drivers:
A strong connection to the sea and stunning coastal views
Honouring place and community, working with local trades and materials
Passive Haus & sustainability principles:
Optimal orientation for solar gain
Summer shading, winter warmth
Local materials
Continuous insulation
High-performance glazing
Rainwater harvesting
On-site photovoltaics

Rooted in simplicity, resilience, and natural beauty.

The value of a measured survey in residential design

We’re beginning a new residential remodeling project in Abbotsford, and as always, one of the first and most critical steps is undertaking an architectural survey.

A measured survey forms the foundation of any well considered design. Capturing a dimensionally accurate record of the existing space ensures that all design decisions moving forward are grounded in reality. It’s an essential process that informs what’s possible structurally, spatially and aesthetically.

Despite advances in technology from 3d scanners to phone apps I still find great value in the traditional method of surveying by hand. I use many of the same techniques I learned in my first job back in 1993. The tools may have changed (laser measurer certainly make things easier), but the process remains largely the same.

These first impressions drawn from physically inhabiting and documenting a space are where good design begins.

Shaped by Nature: Designing with the Huon Valley’s natural wisdom

In the Huon Valley, the land speaks.
Weathered timber farm sheds, silvered by time and wind, stand as quiet reminders of endurance.
Boulders on the beach, rounded smooth by tide and time, show the beauty of natural shaping. The bush, rich with native flora, bursts with resilience and quiet brilliance.

As we design our project overlooking the Huon River, we’re letting this landscape guide our choices.

Instead of imposing a vision, we’re listening to the muted palette of aged timber, the grounded strength of local stone, and the forms of native vegetation shaped by Tasmania’s climate and seasons.

Our approach to material selection honours these natural cues:
- Locally sourced, greying timbers that blend into the environment rather than stand apart
- Stone and earth elements that echo the coastline’s smoothed boulders
- A structure that feels nestled, not placed, reflecting the integrity of native bushland

In doing so, we hope to build more than a house. We are creating a space in relationship with the land it rests on.

As an architectural designer, site analysis is where the story begins. In Tasmania’s Huon Valley, every slope, breeze, and shadow informs design. This rich landscape demands deep listening—understanding topography, solar patterns, views, and native ecologies. It’s not just data collection; it’s a conversation with place. Respecting site character allows architecture to belong—minimising impact while maximising connection. In the Huon, where natural beauty meets climate sensitivity, thoughtful analysis leads to sustainable, soulful spaces. For us, site analysis isn’t a step—it’s the foundation of meaningful, regenerative design.
