Every home holds a story, and the best ones carry it right through the walls.

Pottery House is a contemporary new home in Caulfield South, designed for a family of four and their two dogs. When we came on board, the family already had pieces they loved. A cherished collection of pottery from South Africa, and sentimental works handmade by the client's mother. These were never things to tuck away. They were the heart of the home, so we designed around them.

Artwork that greets you in the hallway. Pottery and pieces layered through the main living spaces, each given room to be seen. A textured microcement fireplace, custom joinery with display shelving, and a warm, considered palette that lets the collection sit front and centre rather than compete with it.

This home tells its own story, but the real shift is in how personal it feels. A home that looks beautiful, and holds a family's history in the same breath.

The palette for a home often begins with a single slab of stone.

Because stone is natural, no two pieces are alike, and what someone is drawn to is often deeply personal. So I like to bring clients in early, before too many decisions are locked in, just to see what they gravitate towards.

There's always a moment where someone stops in front of one particular piece. That reaction tells me so much, and from there the rest of the home starts to take shape around it 🤍

First impressions start at the front door.

When we design a home, the entry gets as much thought as the rooms everyone talks about. It's the first thing you feel when you walk in, and the last thing you pass on the way out. That moment sets the tone for the whole house.

These are the details that make a home feel like yours before you've even taken your coat off - the ones that welcome you home every single day 🤍

Most people see the finished home, but the parts that come before it are quieter, and there are more of them than you'd expect.

Before anything is built, we're working through the details that decide how a home will actually feel to live in. Where the laundry can tuck neatly under the stairs. How a washer and dryer sit so there's still bench space to fold. Which timber runs through the kitchen, the TV unit and the study wall so the whole home feels connected. Whether the shelf lighting sits on its own switch, so you can have task light or mood light depending on the moment.

Every layout, material and measurement is considered around the people who'll live here and the way they move through their day.

It's slow, detailed work. It's also the part that makes a home feel just right once it's finished. Here's a peak inside some design documents that we're working on at the moment

If you'd told me 20 years ago that I'd become an interior designer, I wouldn't have believed you. And I certainly wouldn't have believed that one day over 4,000 of you would be following along.

The journey wasn't planned, but somehow every step led me here - to exactly where I was meant to be.

Before NY Design, I worked as a physiotherapist and then a frontline manager while raising my three boys. It wasn't until we designed and built our own home that something shifted. I became fascinated by the way thoughtful design could change not just how a home looked, but how it felt to live in every day.

That's what I love most about this work. Every family lives differently, and every home should reflect that. It's never just about choosing beautiful materials or finishes - it's about understanding how people live and creating spaces that make everyday life feel easier, calmer and more enjoyable.

Whether it's a kitchen where everyone naturally gathers, a quiet corner to unwind, or storage that simply makes life run more smoothly, those are the details that matter.

Introducing Penny House

Every home has one room that naturally draws people in. For this family in Caulfield North, we wanted it to be this one.

The media room sits at the front of a modern home, but when we first saw it, it was plain white with no personality. The owners and their adult children envisioned something entirely different - a warm, inviting retreat for weekend footy, quiet evenings and long conversations with friends long after dinner has ended.

The design began with the Rosso Trentino marble. Its rich veining became the foundation for the room's palette, inspiring layers of warm browns, earthy reds and soft greys throughout the space. A custom TV unit balances open display shelving with concealed storage, while its darker timber finish allows the television to quietly fade into the background.

Colour-drenched walls create a sense of warmth and intimacy, while richly textured upholstery invites you to sink in and stay awhile. Bronze and brass accents add subtle contrast, and the artworks bring softness, colour and personality to the room.

The result is a space that feels calm, sophisticated and effortlessly welcoming - equally suited to a quiet night in or a house full of family and friends.

A good bathroom does more than function. It brings joy to the everyday.

Some embrace a quiet, neutral palette with a calm, timeless feel. Warm travertine, soft black tapware and a freestanding bath create a space to slow down. A generous double shower beneath a skylight is designed for two people and unhurried mornings. Tundra Grey limestone flows seamlessly across the floor, walls and vanity, creating a warm, cohesive backdrop.

Then there are those with a little more personality. Rich Calacatta Viola marble paired with fluted glass. Speckled terrazzo in dusty shades of pink, warmed by aged brass tapware.

Different homes. Different families. But the same intention behind each one: creating spaces that feel restful to be in, and perfectly suited to the way each day begins and ends.
