People often ask me what the difference is between decorating a home and designing one.

Decorating is choosing the rug, the lamp, the sofa and the artwork. It’s often what happens towards the end, once the walls are built and the spaces are already defined.

Interior design starts much earlier. It’s deciding how a home should flow, where a wall should go, where the light will fall, how much storage is needed, and how a family will actually live in their home every day.

Decorating adds the final layer to a home.

Introducing Bronze House 🤍

Tucked in a tree-lined street in Malvern East, this unit has been completely reimagined into a warm, refined home built for everyday connection.

The showstopper? Knocking down the wall between kitchen and living to create one generous open-plan hub, where family life and entertaining can flow with ease.

Herringbone floors, soft neutral cabinetry, Taj Mahal stone and bronze accents run throughout, giving the whole home an elegant, inviting feel from the moment you step in. A new kitchen with skylights floods the space with natural light, while custom buffet, fireplace joinery and a TV unit add both character and practical storage.

Every bathroom was redesigned with curved details, stone vanities and accessible fixtures - comfort for family and guests alike.

We asked the homeowners of Lumen House to name their favourite part of the kitchen, and they didn't hesitate.

First, the Thermomix nook. Tucked behind its own door, out of sight until it's needed, so the benchtops stay clear for the everyday chaos of life.

Second, the bar. Wrapped in a magnificent stone that stops people mid-conversation, the kind of detail that turns a functional corner into somewhere you actually want to linger.

Two very different choices, one very good kitchen. A reminder that a home works best when it's built around how a family actually lives.

In this Caulfield North living room, one material ties the whole space together.

Brass runs quietly through every layer, the joinery beside the fireplace, the legs of the nested marble coffee tables, the subtle golden tones in the rug. Paired with a soft grey palette and natural stone, it gives the room warmth without ever feeling loud.

This apartment was designed as a home away from home for Perth-based clients, a place to gather their Melbourne-based children and grandchildren under one roof. Details like this are what turn a home away from home into somewhere that feels completely their own.

There’s something special about seeing a kitchen completely transform - not just in how it looks, but in how it feels to be in.

The original kitchen at Lumen House was very much a product of the ’90s - a closed-in floorplan, dark granite benchtops, glossy tiles and angled cabinetry that made the room feel smaller and darker than it was.

We wanted to open up the space and bring in as much natural light as possible. A huge, full-height triple sliding door now floods the kitchen with light and connects the kitchen and living areas to the back garden.

A fluted timber island anchors the space, topped with warm natural stone that continues into the splashback. Soft, handleless cabinetry keeps everything feeling calm and uncluttered, while oak joinery brings warmth and texture to the room.

Most importantly, it’s a kitchen designed for real family life - room to gather, generous storage tucked out of sight, and finishes selected to stand up to the demands of a busy young family.

The same footprint, completely reimagined into a kitchen that feels lighter, warmer and far more connected to the way this family lives.

The laundry is one of those rooms you use every single day, so it should feel easy to move through.

In this one, we raised the washer and dryer to a more comfortable height, with a pull-out shelf just underneath so the basket is right there and there's no bending down to load or unload. A deep sink, overhead cupboards and generous drawers below take care of the rest, so everything has its place.

Step inside Avila House. A solid brick home in Caulfield North, built in the mid-1980s and untouched until its new owners saw its potential. Home to a family of six across three generations, so it had to work for everyone and still feel like one home.

We reimagined the interior from the ground up, and it's the finer touches that hold it together.

A curved feature staircase behind a steel and glass entry. Aged bronze handles on dark timber joinery. Lime wash paint and Carrara marble in the powder room. Arched pendants over honed natural stone in the kitchen. A cinema room in deep navy. A marble dressing table where the day begins.

A feature entrance, a kitchen, a laundry, five bathrooms, a study, a bar, a cinema room and custom robes later - each detail considered on its own and made to sit together.

A home needs to adapt to the rhythm of family life - from a full house to the quieter everyday moments.

When we sourced the furniture for this Bellevue Hill home, we wanted it to work beautifully at every scale. The 20-seat dining room flows into a generous living space designed for gathering, with two Maralunga sofas and pairs of armchairs creating plenty of places for family and friends to settle in.

Then there are the cosier corners, designed for quieter moments. Here, the shape, texture and materiality of each piece invite you to sit, unwind and stay awhile.

Across the home, a layered palette of textiles, timber, stone and warm metals ties everything together. Rich, tactile pieces were carefully sourced to sit comfortably within the scale of the renovation - elegant, but never untouchable.

A home that holds the big, lively moments and the quiet ones just as well.

When you're designing your forever home, you get to choose exactly how you want it to feel to live there.

For some families, that means clean lines, open spaces and a sense of calm. For others, it’s about embracing more traditional ways of living - a library lined with books, a formal lounge or a quiet study that can be closed away.

The beauty is that your home doesn’t need to follow a formula. It needs to reflect the way you live.

Every home holds a story, and the best ones carry it right through the walls.

Pottery House is a contemporary new home in Caulfield South, designed for a family of four and their two dogs. When we came on board, the family already had pieces they loved. A cherished collection of pottery from South Africa, and sentimental works handmade by the client's mother. These were never things to tuck away. They were the heart of the home, so we designed around them.

Artwork that greets you in the hallway. Pottery and pieces layered through the main living spaces, each given room to be seen. A textured microcement fireplace, custom joinery with display shelving, and a warm, considered palette that lets the collection sit front and centre rather than compete with it.

This home tells its own story, but the real shift is in how personal it feels. A home that looks beautiful, and holds a family's history in the same breath.
