We are excited to share that Sunshine Mental Health and Wellbeing Centre (SMHWC) has been shortlisted in the 2024 World Architecture Festival Awards.

NTC Architects and our partners NH Architecture are delighted to be shortlisted and have our work showcased alongside other world-class projects.

SMHWC responds to recommendations from the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System.

From the inclusive codesign process with people with lived experience of mental illness to our architectural response, this project transforms the traditional mental health care setting to create more therapeutic environments. SMHWC integrates the principles of biophilic and salutogenic design, innovatively inverting the traditional internalised floorplan into central large internal courtyards providing daylight and views to nature.

It sets an important precedent for a new approach to mental health design, and hopefully marks the next step in deinstitutionalising mental healthcare settings.
The World Architecture Festival (WAF) is an annual global festival and awards ceremony that celebrates the world’s most innovative projects. This year, the awards will take place in November in Singapore.

Congratulations to Kim for recently completing her Master of Architecture at RMIT. Her Major Project titled “The Embodiment Oval” won the Anne Butler Memorial Medal, which is awarded to the most outstanding Major Project among her peers.

Embedded within and around the former AFL ground at Victoria Park, Kim’s project proposes an alternative model of care in response to the 2019 Royal Commission into the Victorian Government’s Mental Health system.

Her project investigates an architectural methodology for therapeutic spaces that are embodied within inclusive community-based social infrastructure, inviting the participation of community into the healing journey of the individual. The proposal featured streetside respite spaces, a community hall & permaculture garden, as well as a Youth Prevention and Recovery Care Centre (YPARC).

As part of the $141 million Youth Prevention and Recovery Care (YPARC) centre expansion and upgrade program, we are very pleased to share, that construction has started on the Traralgon YPARC centre – the first of five new builds.

YPARC centres provide around-the-clock care and support to young people aged between 16 and 25 experiencing mental health challenges and/or psychological distress. This includes mental health challenges such as depression and anxiety, which are the leading cause of disability in young people.

The new multi-million-dollar Traralgon YPARC centre includes:
• 10 bedrooms complete with ensuite bathrooms
• a communal kitchen
• kitchen, dining and living areas
• breakout spaces
• outdoor garden areas
• a welcoming, safe and therapeutic environment that promotes rest and recovery.

The architectural design solutions were mindfully constructed as part of a considered co-design process. Clinicians, carers and young people with lived and living experience of mental health challenges shared their insights and experiences to help influence the design of the centre.

Village Cinemas at M-City

We have established an excellent working relationship with Village Cinemas, where we have collaborated across twelve cinema projects. One notable project is the design of a brand-new cinema complex at M-City in Clayton.

This project involved the design of six state-of-the-art cinemas, a public foyer space and the development of a new food and beverage offering with the creation of a full bar and restaurant that opens to the public internal mall. The cinemas are designed to optimise the viewing and audio experiences of cinema lovers, all in a comfortable and welcoming environment.

Mental Health Beds Expansion Program

NTC Architects is incredibly proud to be Principal Consultant and lead a dedicated design team to deliver four new acute mental health facilities for the Victorian Health Building Authority. Along with our architectural partners, NH Architecture and BG Architecture, the four projects were delivered at Royal Melbourne Hospital, Northern Hospital, Sunshine Hospital and the McKellar Centre in Geelong.

The Mental Health Beds Expansion Program showcases innovation in Mental Health Facility design and aligns design outcomes with recommendations from the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System.

A total of 120 new acute mental health beds were delivered across the four hospital sites, in a very short three-and half-year period of design and construction.

The four facilities have set a new benchmark for care and amenity for future mental health developments and is a direct outcome of a significant codesign process that aimed to understand the needs of clinical and operational staff, and people with lived experience of mental illness.

The design solutions carefully balance domestic familiarity with mental health requirements of robustness, safety and passive observations.

Shine Bright Early Learning and Maternal and Child Health

This delightful early learning project for Shine Bright EYM, is their first capital venture to design and build a purpose-built centre. This innovative project in Maiden Gully, Bendigo, is an Early Learning and Maternal and Child Health for 152 children ranging in age from 0 to 5 years. The centralised secure entry and reception point allows for two education wings which arranges the education rooms in sequential age range. The education rooms are north facing with direct access to a highly curated outdoor educational landscaped area. To complement the early learning spaces, we also designed a Maternal and Child Health zone which provides five Consulting Rooms for child allied health specialists and GP’s to provide immediate care to children and their parents.

The form is deliberately residential in scale with the predominant material being brick, which allows the building to nestle into its residential setting. The strong gable roof forms coupled with the two-colour brick facades help reduce the bulk of the building and allow it to read as multiple buildings. The interiors are colourful, playful and at a scale to specifically address the height of the children.

Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health

The design of a new flagship building for Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health in Kyneton was an important project for the communities of the Macedon Shire. It allows SCCH to provide their numerous and far-reaching community health services under one roof and cease operating from multiple existing buildings in Kyneton.

Three distinct pavilions are anchored to a large central, light filled reception and waiting area. Each pavilion is dedicated to a specific function for the SCCH team workplace, community meeting spaces and allied health.

The form, materiality and colouration take cues from the Macedon Ranges, the local landscape and vernacular. The arch is used to create a memorable motif made from clever use of off-the-shelf bricks and Colorbond metal cladding.

Thank you to and the jury of the interiors category for the Commendation for the McKellar Centre Mental Health Unit in Geelong.

We are proud to have led this project and are incredibly grateful to our architectural partners and our dedicated subconsultants who all worked tirelessly, to deliver this important project for the Consumers, their families and carers and the staff of .

Thank you also to our client, Victorian Health Building Authority and our key stakeholder Barwon Health.

architecture_vic Congratulations to NTC Architects with BG Architecture for winning a Commendation in the Interior Architecture category for The Mental Health Beds Expansion Program at McKellar Centre in the 2023 Victorian Architecture Awards.

Responding to the Royal Commission into the mental healthcare system, this project not only addresses the physical constraints of such a demanding building type, but whole heartedly embraces its greater intent, providing a place that cares, nurtures and protects. With the resultant building wrapping around a series of landscaped and accessible courtyards, warm, textural, light-filled, understandable in its layout while robust and protective in its built form. It is domestic in scale and feel as opposed to institutional.
