Developers: your finishes shouldn’t be an afterthought.

The colours, materials and details you choose don’t just influence how a property looks. They shape how it feels, how it’s positioned in the market and ultimately how buyers connect with the space.

For this recently completed townhouse development in Glen Iris, we worked closely with the developer to understand the target market, the intended sale price and the level of finish needed to create a beautiful, high end result.

From there, we designed every internal space across both townhouses, including detailed cabinetry design, full documentation, colour selections and finishes.

The finished homes feature:

✨ Tundra Grey natural stone benchtops throughout
✨ Floor to ceiling 600 x 600 tiles to all wet areas
✨ Premium tapware finishes
✨ A curved Venetian plaster fireplace detail
✨ A fluted glass bar cabinet with integrated LED lighting, which is definitely one of my favourite features

Tomorrow, the stylist creates their magic and the homes will be ready for their first open for inspection. It’s always exciting seeing the drawings, samples and decisions come together into a finished space.

Good interior design for a residential development is about more than selecting beautiful finishes. It’s about making strategic design decisions that suit the market, support the value of the property and create a home buyers can picture themselves living in.

This week I spent the day at Decor + Design exploring new product releases, discovering a few new suppliers and reconnecting with some of our trusted favourites.

One of the things I love most about days like this is seeing products in person. You can touch the finishes, compare colours, ask questions and find those little details that make all the difference when designing a home.

And, as always, the highlight was catching up with so many talented designers and industry friends.

One of my favourite things to design is a home that works for more than just today.

So many families are living with grandparents, welcoming adult kids back home, or simply wanting to stay in the same home as they get older.

The best part is that the design choices that make a home work for every generation are usually the same things that make it feel more luxurious too.

Things like wider hallways, walk in showers, clever storage and kitchens that are actually easy to cook in.

It’s not about designing for “old age.”

It’s about designing a home that grows with your family instead of one your family grows out of.

I honestly think that’s what good design is all about.

Most people think interior design is choosing paint colours and furniture.

But that’s only a small part of what we do.

For this Newport renovation, we’re working alongside Basset Lobaza Architects to design every interior detail before construction even begins.

That means creating detailed 2D elevation drawings for every space in the home, along with a complete schedule of finishes, fixtures, tapware, tiles, cabinetry, lighting, paint colours and hardware.

Why do we do all of this before our clients have even chosen a builder?

Because when builders are pricing the project, everyone is quoting from the same level of detail. There are fewer assumptions, fewer surprises and a much more accurate construction cost.

It also means that once construction starts, everyone has a clear roadmap to follow.

Less confusion.
Fewer costly variations.
Better decisions.
A smoother build.

This is one of the biggest investments you’ll ever make, and good documentation is one of the best ways to protect it.

It’s not the glamorous side of interior design but it’s definitely one of the most important.

One of my favourite parts of the design process is sitting down with our clients and bringing all the details together before construction begins.

This stage is where the vision becomes a clear plan- right before we hand over all the documents to the builder.

Our role as an interior designer isn’t just to make a home look beautiful. It’s to help our clients make confident decisions, avoid costly mistakes and create spaces that work beautifully for the way they live.

Because the best renovations aren’t created by making rushed decisions.

They’re created through thoughtful planning.

A little sourcing trip to Adairs today, pulling together the final layers for our Williamstown renovation. Old mate joining me too of course!

The brief has always been a relaxed French beach house aesthetic, so textured linen and classic stripes were an easy yes. But I couldn’t resist introducing a rich dark chocolate gingham with soft powdery blue. 💙💙

It adds just enough contrast while still feeling calm and effortless.

We already have a green upholstered bedhead and matching rug, the palette feels grounded, warm and lived in. And of course, a ridiculously soft fur throw for those crisp winter mornings when getting out of bed feels like a terrible idea!

The renovation is almost complete, the furniture is starting to arrive, and this is the part I love most… adding the layers that make a house feel like home!

Just landed in the USA for High Point Market, but first stop… La Jolla 🌴☀️

Easing into the trip with a little sun, beach time and (let’s be honest) some very intentional house spotting.

Taking in all the details… materials, textures, that effortless indoor-outdoor flow California does so well.

It’s a bit of a whirlwind two weeks ahead, but these slower moments at the start always spark the best ideas. I already know I’ll be coming home feeling inspired, refreshed and ready to pour that straight back into my client projects 🤍

When planning a renovation or new build, one of the most common things I hear is:

“I think we should think about resale value when we pick colours and finishes”.

And I usually push back.

Because if you’re constantly designing your home for a future buyer you don’t even know yet… you end up compromising the very thing that matters most...how you actually live in the space.

Your home should reflect you.

-Your lifestyle.
-Your routines.
-Your taste.
-Your version of beautiful.

Not a hypothetical buyer 10–15 years down the track.

The homes that feel the most effortless and elevated are the ones designed with intention from the start, where function, flow, and personality come first.

And here’s something important:

Most buyers, if and when you do sell, will want to make their own changes anyway. So designing your entire home around “what might appeal later” can often dilute what could have been a truly special space.

The only time I design specifically for resale value is when I’m working with developers or property investors. That is a completely different strategy, focused on margin, market appeal, and return on investment from day one.

But for your own home?

That’s not the brief.

Design it for you.
Live in it fully.
Let it support your life now, not just its future value.
