This is what a collected home looks like.

Tim Ross and Michelle Glew-Ross’ Northern Rivers retreat is full of the things I love most in a home. Old furniture. Handmade ceramics. Pieces picked up over time. Things inherited from family. Things that probably don’t technically “go” together, but somehow absolutely do.

There’s nothing overly polished about it. Nothing looks like it arrived in one big furniture delivery. And perhaps best of all, they haven’t tried to turn the original little cottage into something bigger or grander than it needs to be.

Tim describes the size and scale of the house as where the magic is, and I think you can feel that in every room. It feels personal, relaxed and properly lived in.

The most beautiful Australian homes have a habit of bringing the outdoors in.

A branch clipped on the morning walk. Warm timber. Weathered stone. Soft linen. Handmade pieces with texture and character. Nothing too perfect. Nothing trying too hard.

Just a home that feels connected to the landscape around it.

I love homes like this because they belong exactly where they are.

The colours echo the landscape. The materials feel honest. Nothing shouts for attention because the view is already doing that.

I think the best Australian homes don't try to outshine their surroundings. They become part of them.

This beautiful home on Bruny Island is a perfect reminder of that.
