It all started at the Wednesday market in Mornington, selling cushion covers made from antique rugs.

Today, standing in our showroom surrounded by these beautiful pieces, I’m reminded of those early mornings and everyone who supported us along the way.

From a market stall to Sama Rugs, Mornington has been part of our story from the very beginning.

Thank you for being part of it.

I’ve always had a real passion for Afghan rugs. For me, it’s not just about how beautiful they look — it’s knowing the story and the people behind each piece.
Many of our rugs are hand-knotted by women in Afghanistan, using natural wool and traditional dyeing techniques that have been passed down through generations. The slight variations in colour, the weave and the little imperfections are exactly what make them special.
By continuing to source these rugs directly from Afghanistan, we’re also helping support the artisans and families who rely on this craft for their livelihood. That’s something that means a lot to me personally.
Every rug has taken months of work, patience and skill. I’m proud that we can bring a small part of Afghanistan’s craftsmanship and culture into Australian homes.

There’s a lot more to a handmade rug than just the pattern you see.
This is one of those pieces you really need to look at up close. The colours, the small details and the natural variations throughout the rug are what give it so much character.
Hand-knotted in Afghanistan using wool and natural dyes, there’s a real story behind how these rugs are made — and hopefully this video gives you a little insight into that.
We genuinely love having pieces like this come through our doors. They’re unique, full of character, and no two ever feel quite the same.
Come in and have a look for yourself — photos and videos never quite do them justice.

Some homes just feel right from the moment you walk through the door.

This hand-knotted Afghan Chobi found exactly that. Woven from hand-spun wool and coloured using traditional wooden and natural dyes, its palette of warm walnut, soft ivory, dusty blue and gentle blush sits so effortlessly within the space. Every colour feels calm, grounded and timeless—never demanding attention, yet quietly transforming the room.

What made this home even more special was its owner. Warm, genuine and beautifully down to earth, she created a space that reflects exactly what these rugs are all about. Peaceful, welcoming and filled with character rather than trends. It wasn't just a rug finding a home—it felt like it had always belonged there.

Moments like these remind us that the best interiors aren't created overnight. They're built with pieces that tell a story and people who appreciate craftsmanship.
Thank you for welcoming us into your beautiful home. 🤍

Raised in a family of rug traders, my earliest memories were spent at markets across Victoria, surrounded by pieces I didn’t yet understand.

I stepped away to study Civil Engineering and work in construction, but was ultimately drawn back — this time with a deeper appreciation for the craft.

Today, Sama Rugs is shaped by years of travel, time spent with artisans, and a continual study of materials, techniques, and design traditions from across regions.
Each rug is special.

Not just for how it looks, but for its origin, construction, and how it will live within a space.
A collection built with intention — and access that comes from being closely connected to the people who make them.

What a beautiful surprise today.

This piece has just arrived, handcrafted by our artisans, and I honestly couldn’t wait to see it in person. What a treasure trove of beauty — something you simply have to stand in front of to truly take it all in.

Colours like this are rarely seen anymore.
Every tone is created using natural dyes — drawn from plants, roots, and minerals, then worked into hand-spun sheep wool. That’s why the green feels so soft and organic, why the colours have depth instead of shine. They don’t sit on the rug — they live within it.
A true one-off. Nothing quite like it.

Now at Sama Rugs
