What could the 2027 MRI Medicare change mean for radiology practices?

From 1 July 2027, subject to passage of legislation, metropolitan practices won't need a licensed MRI to attract a Medicare rebate. However eligibility isn't automatic, what's still required:

→ X-ray, ultrasound, CT and MRI all on the same site
→ Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation
→ A specialist radiologist on-site meeting supervision requirements
→ Your MRI listed on the Location Specific Practice Number Register
→ Equipment within its life age (10 years, or 20 if upgraded)

With supply and demand for rebated scans set to rise, competition amongst existing and new radiology practices will likely increase alongside it.

Over the past 12 months, our project managers, Peter James Doueihi and Dean Taaffe, have delivered three complex healthcare fitouts, each completed within operating hospitals on expedited, low-disruption programmes.

A closer look at the stunning clinic for Genea Wollongong, designed and delivered earlier this year by Interite.

A coastal inspired design, reflects the natural environment it surrounds. The 400 SQM space is centred around the reception and waiting area, with strategic zoning of consulting and diagnostic rooms on one side, with the staff areas, laboratory and collection rooms on the other.

Stage 2 Complete | Bicton Aged Care Refurbishment

Interite recently handed over the final areas of a two-stage refurbishment for a large residential aged care facility, in Bicton WA. The project replaced outdated layouts and communal areas with modern, fit-for-purpose spaces, while upgrading and expanding resident room capacity to 61 beds.

→ Stage 1: 20 upgraded beds, new communal areas, and a new servery and dining space.
→ Stage 2: 41 upgraded beds and communal spaces across 1,856 SQM, delivered in four zones to enable a safe, phased handover.

Careful planning and staging kept the project on track and allowed residents and staff to return to upgraded spaces sooner.

A new Class 9a conversion is currently underway in Melbourne.

Taking the site from an existing retail fitout to a day hospital demands significant increases in heating, cooling and air quality standards, ensuring it can handle the stringent requirements of a Class 9a facility.

Last week, that included craning 400kg mechanical condensers onto the roof, to support the upgraded air conditioning and filtration systems required for the clinical environment.

Take a closer look at IVF Australia’s new clinic in Liverpool, Sydney.

Designed and delivered by Interite earlier this year, the 700 sqm facility brings every stage of the IVF journey under one roof. From calming patient spaces, to a specialised laboratory, procedure centre and recovery suites.

Delivered on within a live environment at Sydney Southwest Private Hospital, our team carefully coordinated works to ensure minimal disruption to surrounding hospital services while maintaining a tight construction programme.

In just two months, our team delivered a 590 SQM community health fitout for headspace Fremantle. Merging four separate tenancies within a busy shopping precinct into one flexible and welcoming space for staff, clinicians and young people.
