Based in Oaklands, NSW, Empire Proteas grow and supply proteas, leucadendrons and a growing number of Australian natives to the local region. Situated on a 5 acre block, we currently have 1,000 plants of over a dozen varieties to offer our customers. Whether you’re a florist placing a weekly order, a business looking for a regular floral arrangement or that one off customer to mark that special oc

casion, both large and small, we are happy to work with you to provide the best quality stems for your needs. With the vast majority of our flowers picked within 24-48hrs of reaching our clients and coming straight from the farm to the customer, it’s hard to find flowers with more life in them. You can find us at a number of markets in the Border area where you can purchase your stems individually or choose from one of our different sized mixed posies, boxed arrangements and baskets. We also take orders for wreaths, bulk orders and are happy to discuss customised requirements you may have. We are excited to build our business with you and are looking to expand our varieties to cater for all tastes and seasons.

With a new batch of seeds coming this week and another one ordered today things are starting to fill up. I’m not sure if I could sneak in another greenhouse. I’ve tried looking everywhere on the internet that could justify growing sunflowers at this time of year and nothing showed up however when preparing the new beds I saw that they were self seeding in the rows so I’m taking that as a sign.

Emma has handed me some snow peas and peas to plant on top of potting up some lettuce and broccoli so the vegetables are starting to take off also

Today is the day I officially leave my 30s behind and enter my 40s. I was thinking about this earlier today that I spent my entire 30s chasing this dream of Empire Proteas, in some sort of capacity, and couldn’t quite break through. Thanks to the support of friends, family and everyone here in the community every time I thought I had enough I decided to give it one last go.

Special thank you and gratitude and appreciation and all the associated words go out to Emma who has provided me with this “one last” opportunity to give it a red hot crack. This is the year where I hope I don’t look back and say “I wish I had done more”

I’m off to Waldron's Fresh On River - IGA Corowa and IGA Rutherglen with some fresh blooms. What better way to start your 40s!!

A big goal this year is to get amongst the younger generation and get them to experience flowers with a hands on approach. This would involve going into schools, showcasing our flowers and letting them use their creativity, which is something I’ve always enjoyed Odie doing.

However to achieve this goal we need a lot of flowers and this is where these everlastings come into play. I think last year my total everlastings plant count was sitting around 300. My calculations for this order sit at around 1,500-2,000 plants (this isn’t the only packet 😂) and posts have been showing up on my Facebook feed for a while now so I thought it was time to give them a try. After seeing their fields of flowers it was a pretty easy decision to make.

My biggest issue now will be self control, just a few trays a week instead of going crazy!!! Stay tuned, things are about to kick off

Just a bit of a winter walkthrough. Things are definitely slow and steady and in a few months time I’ll look back and be grateful of the quiet times

A big goal for later in the year was to have a better identity when it comes to our flowers. Instead of just being someone who has a few buckets in store we wanted to make the display something that draws people in and is a bit of a talking point.

I got started on a concept a while ago and the IGA’s liked the idea and finally started the build yesterday when I had some spare time. I’m liking the display thus far, need to polish off the second layer and add in some space for gift boxes. ChatGPT has been very kind in how it thinks it would look filled in store

This is part of the business that I not only want to learn more about but share within the community. One advantage of having no knowledge is I don’t know if I’m making any mistakes. The kids get to see the cycle of raising seeds to small plants and then getting to pick the resulting flowers. I think the next part is letting plants go to seed and harvesting the seeds and learning about that cycle of life with the end goal of being able to share the same experience with the younger generation in the community

We grew some broccoli in what I’d consider not ideal conditions. They looked to be a bit too leggy as I didn’t have the green houses transitioned out of summer so I gave up on them but left 1 tray on the trampoline. Fast forward a few weeks and Emma was wondering how they were going and I told her I’ll get some from Bunnings.

Turns out our ones (on the left) weren’t too far off the mark after all
