Tyalgum Honey Thieves

Tyalgum Honey Thieves The main reason bees make honey is to feed the hive they live in. They make honey from Spring to Autumn and store enough to live on during the winter.

So when we take a portion of honey, we are in fact β€œstealing”. Hence our name Honey Thieves!

The first big honey flow of the season has commenced with the turpentine gums in flower. The trees are humming with bees. Thank goodness the flavour of the honey from it doesn't take after the name of the treeπŸ˜†.

Our beekeeper collected a mega swarm this week, a column of bees over a metre long.
Bees tend to swarm in late winter/early spring. It is up to the beekeeper to manage this process so that the bees don't become a pest to people and other animals alike.

This week we placed 10 new queen bees in 10 new colonies. They arrive in tiny cages, one queen per cage along with a retinue of several worker bees to keep her fed & groomed in the short time before she meets her new colony.
The queens were provided by Murwillumbah Queen Bees. They will add some new genetics to our apiary. https://www.facebook.com/Murwillumbah-Queen-Bees-186654355310154

Yesterday we harvested nearly 100kg of yummy autumn and winter honey. The bees are gathering so much nectar that they had run out of storage area. So we have freed up some space in each hive.

A beautiful start to the day😊
