One of the biggest furnishing mistakes I see is choosing each piece individually rather than considering the proportions of the entire room.

Project Sutton has a generous open plan living area. The clients opting not to have an indoor dining zone. So filling it with lots of smaller furniture would actually make the room feel less resolved.

Instead, the concept uses a substantial rug to establish the living zone, a generously scaled sofa, two curved occasional chairs and a large round coffee table nested with an ottoman

The furniture has enough visual weight for the room, while the space around it maintains clear circulation between the kitchen, living area and balcony.

This is why I start furnishing projects with a scaled furniture plan before sourcing begins.

A sofa might look beautiful online, but the more important question is:

Is it the right sofa for this room?

A first look at the concept for Project Sutton.

For this project, the brief goes beyond selecting individual pieces of furniture. We are furnishing the home as a whole, considering how each room connects while still giving the different spaces their own identity.

The direction is light and relaxed with warm timber, soft neutral upholstery, natural texture and subtle blue and green accents.

But before selecting individual pieces, the first priority was planning.

Furniture scale, placement, circulation, storage, lighting and how the different areas would be used all needed to be considered before we could build the furnishing scheme around them.

This is one of the biggest differences between furnishing a home room by room and developing one complete plan from the beginning.

Furniture does so much more than fill a space.

The right selections are what give a room its personality. That feeling of wanting to settle in and stay a while. Getting there takes a lot more than finding pieces you love individually.

In this living room at Project Coolum, every piece was chosen to work together as a whole. The rust sectional brings warmth and grounds the space without competing with that incredible waterfront view. The organic timber coffee tables add texture and an earthiness that stops the room from feeling too polished. The layered cushions tie everything back to the tones running through the rest of the home.

It is the combination of all of it together that makes the room feel the way it does.

A design fee at the start is not an added cost. It is the thing that makes every other cost work harder.

Calling a designer after the decisions are made is not a finishing touch, it is damage control.

The details should not be left to refine at the end, they are the foundation every other decision builds on. Get them right at the start and your budget works. Get them wrong and you spend half of your renovation correcting it.

The earlier the conversation happens, the better the outcome. Not only for your sanity but a better end result as well.

This is just the beginning. A moodboard and a 3D concept are where the vision comes to life, but the most important work happens after this point.

Getting the layout right. Making sure the room flows the way it should and functions the way you actually live, not just the way it looks in a render.

The aesthetic is the easy part to fall in love with. But a beautiful room that does not function properly will frustrate you every single day.
This is why the process matters just as much as the outcome.

Most homes that feel flat were not under-budgeted. They were under-committed.

Every decision was made from a safe place. Safe tiles. Safe cabinetry. Safe lighting. Safe furniture. Nothing technically wrong, but nothing that feels like anyone actually lives there either.

Somewhere along the way, designing around personality got replaced by designing around resale value and Pinterest approval. The result is homes that look like everyone else’s inspiration board and feel like no one’s in particular.

The homes that stay with you are rarely the boldest ones. They are the ones where you can feel the confidence behind the decisions. Richer textures, warmer timbers, moodier lighting, artwork that actually means something to the people who chose it.

If your home doesn’t function properly, no amount of cosmetic updates will fix it.

You can replace the furniture, repaint the walls and update the lighting, but if the layout isn’t working or the space hasn’t been properly thought through, it will still feel the same to live in.

People often try to fix a functional problem with surface level changes, and while it might improve how the space looks, it doesn’t change how it feels day to day.

Good design starts with how a space works. The layout, the flow, the way you move through it and use it. Your investment needs to focus on the right changes.

Get that right, everything else starts to fall into place.

Which one are you? The one staring at your home thinking where do I even begin with this…

Or the one with a camera roll full of ideas, who loves everything but can’t quite pull it together.

I work with both all the time. And what’s interesting is they usually end up in the same place. Feeling stuck, putting decisions off, or creating something doesn’t quite feel right.

It’s not about having more ideas or better taste.

It’s about having someone step in, filter it all, and shape it into a clear direction so every decision actually works together.
