Why buy new materials when there’s so much available to recycle?
When you can make pearls from plastic bags found flying on the streets of North Melbourne or collected around for recycling (thanks to everyone who DM’d and collected plastic bags for me!).
This month I was challenged by to adapt, add or extend and make a new iteration of my Assembly Chair for their exhibition a “CHAIR”.
The Assembly Chair is made of recycled plastic bottles and containers from Melbourne collected waste. This material is HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) and the panels for the chair were produced industrially in a Melbourne factory.
For the new iteration with Craft Victoria I wanted to continue the circular design principle where in the future the piece can be completely melted to give birth to a new product.
For this new addition I’m using the soft plastic bags which are LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene).
LDPE and HDPE can be melted together to a new type of MDPE (Medium Density Polyethylene) used for example for potable water pipes.
Recycling and bounding together compatible materials contributes to circular design and this what I wanted to combine in this new project. Stay tuned to see the result!

Such a pleasure of being part of the DIY Neighbourhood workshops, which were organised by Urban Design Forum as part of Melbourne Design Week.

I was asked as a guest artist of to work with Collingwood College's year 8 students. college

Over the course of six weeks, students interviewed people, mapped out, explored, and reflected on their Collingwood neighbourhood.

The students went on research walks in the streets around Collingwood School, guided in this process by volunteer urbanists.

This investigation resulted in the selection of seven places. These were sites where the students felt needed improvement. They considered these locations to be unsafe, unpleasant, or unappealing.

For each location, I asked the students to produce a landmark. An artwork composed of pre-loved toys and objects that they would bring from home.

Objects they would assemble together and could make them feel connected to the place.

The artworks were accompanied by a panel with words expressing their hopes for the rehabilitation of these locations.

The project was presented with a panel discussion on Monday 21st at the Music Room .

The night began with reflections from Year 8 students, who told the audience what they liked about Collingwood, what they learned during the workshops, and what they want to see Collingwood do next.

Next up was a panel discussion led by Katherine Sunderman with the panellists - Alison Whitten, Tim Riley, Shantra Road and Andy Fergus. The panellists discussed ideas on how to truly engage citizens and the community in the design of our cities.

Thank you and .college for the incredible experience! 🖤

Creatures of Light" is an exploratory piece and illuminated sculpture that focuses on the delicate lichen ecology.
It is made of wool fabric offcuts assembled together using a binding technique developed to create a tapestry that replicates the lichens' surface.
Lichens were amongst the first colonisers of land. As they moved from water to land, lichens created more hospitable setting for plants.
Lava emitted during volcanic eruptions was quickly colonised by lichens. Lichens started to grow on freshly cooled lava flows before soil started to form. When lichens decayed, their remains became part of the soil along with broken down minerals. Lichens contain acid that help break down rock.

Lichens, as one of the oldest living organisms on the planet, are extremely sensitive to environmental changes, making them key indicators of climate change and pollution.

Lichens can withstand extreme conditions, and as climate change and plants extinction threatens humanity, certain type of resilient lichens may be the only food we can find on the planet. 🌏

Detail of “Creatures of Light” under UV light.
The edges of the fabric and the embossed lines on the spheres has been painted with fluorescent and UV sensitive paint.

This fluorescence evokes the cyanobacteria responsible for the UV protection in lichens.
Lichens surface under ultraviolet light reveals a secret world of vivid colours.

’m very excited in presenting this new work “Creatures of Light” this week at the inaugural Melbourne Design Fair].

Two of my works “Creatures of Light” and ToTem “M”, will be showcased in SELECT at the fantastic Melbourne Design Fair curated by Simone LeAmon, NGV's Hugh Williamson Curator of Contemporary Design and Architecture ( ).

“Creatures of Light” is an exploratory piece and
an illuminated sculpture that highlights the delicate lichen ecology.
It is made of wool fabric offcuts assembled together using a binding technique developed to create a tapestry that replicates the lichens' surface.
Lichens may have been the first organisms to make their way onto land from the water, changing the planet's atmosphere and paving the way for modern plants.
Lichens are extremely sensitive to environmental changes, making them key markers of climate change and pollution. Lichens are a composite organism formed by fungus and cyanobacteria living in a symbiotic relationship.
The photosynthetic cyanobacteria is responsible for the fungus's UV protection and under ultraviolet light, it reveals a secret world of vivid colours.  Anthropogenic air pollutants lead lichens to die and the cyanobacteria coloured surface fades to purplish and dark tonalities.
Creatures of Light reveal the lichen's dying surface when exposed to UV light.
The fluorescence of the lichens is highlighted when shining a torch on the surface of the spheres and fabric edges.
The gloomy dripping appearance of the totemic structure depicts the beauty of an existence that is exhausted.

Just two days to the performance Windgate Sings the City!!
This Friday 11th at 7.00pm at MPavillion.

Free and No Booking required.

Multidisciplinary artist & architect Marta Figueiredo, experimental artist and musician Aarti Jadu, musician Jonathon Griggs and writer Tess Maunder collaborate to present Windgate at MPavilion. MPavilion]

Windgate is a one-of-a kind musical object, a twisted skyscraper that can be played like an instrument. Poetic and daring, Windgate sings about the alienation and otherness that skyscraper architecture instills in us.

Expect a musical performance that exchanges the role of sound between that which is deemed object and human and that which is electronic and voice. This distinction between object and human occupies Jadu’s thoughts, as “she” aptly considers “her” pronouns in solidarity with object, environment, animal and spirit, in hope for equal respect and rights between all.

The exchange between the two biases will inform the improvisation and invite the audience to come close and interact with the provocations being presented.

The performance will take place at MPAvilion on Friday 11th of March, starting at 7pm.
