When looking at "Trends" and designer homes, first think:
Whose cleaning it?
How is it going to be cleaning it?
How long is it going to take to clean it?
In a functional home, there is one thing to look upto date, another about longevity of design, and the practical functionality of the design elements.
A designer should be able to take some features and make it functional in your home. This is the difference between copying from an image, or haveing it designed.
A good designer will take what you want into what you need.

As an Australian, a Scientist and a Designer I have been saying that we must maintain as much grass as possible. A growing lawn in an average backyard on a 700m2 site can off-set the emmissions of cars and electricity used by that household. Green lawn also reduces the ambient heat in the area by upto 12oC (I have measured variations upto 34oC, but that was a specific thing- farming actually), thus reducing water loose and ned for excessive air conditioning. Even in cold months (commonly see in temps below4oC) the vegetation can mainatin a warmer air envelope (if your homeless in a winter location, sleeping under bushes keeps you quite warm!) So in the Article of Artifical Turff, although convient is definetly something Councils needs to keep in check. Yes its easy to maintain, but its time people stop being lazy, yes I said that, and actually spend time at home and time with family. That's not running the kids everywhere, that's not about being the "best parent" visually, but being grounded people. THe economy will survive if we spend m ore time in our spaces.

I love colour in Design, here is a fantastic example how bold multiples of colour can be put together and to add to that old with new. The World Of Interiors is a fabulous magazine if you are willing to brave the bold and difference.

The "Butlers Pantry"is not a Butlers pantry it is more like a Scullery. But what is the purpose in todays houses? To me it is an contradiction! We are lead to believe that we want a open concept with the kitchen and family area and even dining, so everyone can socialise together while cooking, families can interact or be watched fromthe kitchen.
So the "Butlers Pantry" is a hiden tiny room, where you have an extra fridge, large work bench spaces, sinks, dishwasher, food storage, appliances and utensil storage and sometimes extra ovens - add the cooktop and bingo you have a kitchen.
Does not the "Butlers Pantry" actuall be a segregated Kitchen, hence now having two kitchens in the house!
Now add to this, Houses here in Australia are supose to push to Sustainability, and an Energy Rating of 7Stars. This rating also incorporates the amount of appliances in the house uses, including heating and cooling. Sustainablity incorporates energy and water consumption.
The "Butlers Pantry" is nothing but a waste of money, on all levels. If you want to hide the kitchen mess, then have a closed off Kitchen, and there is many ways to make this happen and have an open concept as well.

Australia it is way past time we adopted this concept in areas where it is applicable. Not all ground types in Australia would be ideal, but there are plenty of areas where this would be the best option!

From TV shows like the Block and Fixer Upper (not singling any specific ones as bad) it is a thing not that everything has to be white and neutral, every room has to be the same, and every room has to be cohesive together. This creates a sterile environment and unstimulating. And finally, that what is in the magazines (pinterest) is the must too!
Heres a modest looking house that although has a white base to it, bubbles out into variations and includes boldness. Not everyones choice, but should be inspirational.
