Six months after the renovation, everyone’s still sitting in the old part of the house.
It’s almost never the size. It’s the light.
Melbourne’s useful light comes from the north — steady in winter, easy to shade in summer. A wall of west-facing glass looks spectacular in the drawing and is unusable in February.
The fix isn’t bigger windows. It’s deciding where the rooms go after you know where the sun is.
Before you brief anyone, spend a weekend paying attention. Where does the sun land at 8am, at midday, at 4pm — in winter, not summer. Which room does everyone drift to? Which one does nobody use?
That’s the brief. It’s more useful than a room count.
