πŸŽ€ In-Store Maker Spotlight - Katrina from Alannah Grace Creations πŸŽ€

Did you meet Katrina this morning? She was in store sewing up some of her popular korker bows, serving customers, filming some content for social media, and… juggling?! Katrina is a Casey local who makes hair bows, scrunchies, ouchie pouches, lanyard organisers and much more!

What inspired you to start your business?
"I’ve always been creative and craft obsessed. I started making accessories when my first daughter was born when I found it really hard to find nice baby headbands and then started Alannah Grace Creations after spending years making pretty things for myself and my girls. All the compliments I got motivated me to create my little business."

What is the meaning behind your business name?
"The name Alannah Grace came from our baby name list πŸ™Š"

Which product is your favourite to make, and why?
"All of my products are handmade. My favourite to make is probably my korker bows. I love seeing them on my girls and customers. I’m a perfectionist, everything I make is with love. If I don’t think a bow will have enough images I’ll fussy cut and sew pictures together to get the perfect bow."

What do you love most about your business?
"I love being able to follow the path of what my kids need and like. I love when customers share photos with me and seeing the beautiful smiles. I hope my products bring as much joy to my customers as they do to me when I’m making them."

🧢In-store Maker Spotlight - Dani from Hook Line and Tinker 🧢
If you came into the shop today, you probably met Dani behind the counter. Dani is a Pakenham local and a regular at markets around the south eastern suburbs, selling her adorable crochet plushies.

What inspired you to start your business?
"I first started my initial business during covid starting out making scrunchies as a way to keep myself sane. It was over the last two years after getting sick of the repetitive routine and an over saturated market that I decided to look into crochet plushies. I was lucky when I was 7 that my grandmother taught me the basics of crochet. So with a bit of trial and error I slowly learnt how to make plushies and since then my little business has evolved into what it is today where I am making more gorgeous and complex patterns."

Can you describe your style or signature touch?
"I would say it’s hard to narrow my style down to any one particular thing. My crochet does definitely have a cutesy style to it, but it is heavily led by what hyper-fixations my ADHD has from one day to the next. I particularly enjoy working with chenille or chunky yarn, and I love making cows and dinosaurs especially."

What is the β€˜why’ behind your business?
"For me it has never been about making money to pay bills. My making of my plushies is me taking time for myself to let my creative side burst out and take time out from my full time office job and uni studies. It allows me to escape my mundane life and lets the colour and sparkle shine through."

What do you love most about being a part of The Shop of Little Shops?
"My all time favourite thing about the store is the community, passion and creativity behind the team. If it wasn’t for the blood sweat and tears of the core three Tara, Siobhan and Aleisha - the shop just wouldn’t be where it is today. The dream that Tara started with has become so much more and it is the reason so many of us have had the chance to grow and establish our businesses. I have been a seller at the store since day 1, and I will continue to stick by the store and its team. We are all one big happy family at this point."

βœ‚οΈ In-Store Maker Spotlight - J & M Handmade Creations βœ‚οΈ Over the next couple of weeks we will be interviewing some of the makers you may have met behind the counter in the new shop. Today Jude, a Pakenham local who sews & crochets, is in store ready for a chat!

Tell us a little bit about yourself & what you make:
"Hi, I’m Jude, I am the hands behind my tiny business, a local resident for over 10 years and I make hanging towels, heat packs with covers, felt hanging bookmarks, square corner bookmarks and book covers. About 9 years ago we discovered I have a somewhat debilitating Neuro illness. While I can have some very rough days, I choose to champion the good days and my little achievements. I am still able to volunteer with CFA, and now in my 6th year. Since creating my tiny business, I have found I have a bit more spring in my step. So I am very thankful to our community for their support."

What are your favourite products to make and why?:
"I love my hanging towels, mainly due to their everyday usability. I love gifts that have a function. I am also slightly in love with my little felt hanging bookmarks. I am proud of how they have evolved and that there is nothing on the market the same."

How long have you been sewing and crafting?:
"My Aunt taught me to crochet when I was 5 and taught me to sew when I was about 11, So I have been crafting for about 40ish years. Since the passing of my Aunty, I find myself thinking of her while sewing, which fills me with warmth."

What do you love most about your business?:
"I love creating items which are well made, but also well priced. It was important to me that I made a product that even someone on a tighter budget could still afford. I get joy out of knowing someone has taken time to come into the shop, look over the many delightful items from some very talented makers, and choose one of my items to leave with. I would like to think people like my products enough to use them on a daily basis."
