Get a last minute garlic crop in this weekend to harvest before Xmas! 🧄

Step 1. Grab some spray free/organic garlic from Urban Revolution 😁
Step 2. W**d and prepare your garden bed for planting. Mark planting homes about 10-15 cm apart.
Step 3. Break bulb into cloves.
Step 4. Plant clove pointy side up.
Step 5. Add some kelp powder (also from Urban Revolution). Can dilute to make liquid, or just sprinkle the powder and let the rain do the job of watering in.
Step 6. Throw in some radish seeds - these can be harvested in 6 weeks, well before the garlic needs the room to grow (and will satisfy the impatient gardeners among us while we wait for the garlic to grow)
Step 7. Mulch well and make a cuppa to celebrate a job well done! 👍🏻

The cooler, wetter days in June and July mark the Noongar season of Makuru – a lovely time of year for Perth veggie gardeners 👩‍🌾🌱

Soil temperatures are still warm enough to suit a large range of seeds, and with rain falling more regularly, it's a great time to sow new crops.

Plant your favourite brassicas such as kale, mustard, rocket and spinach. Now is also a great time for stars like brown onions, rhubarb, peas and shallots . 🥬🥦

Don’t forget to get your seed potatoes as well! 🥔

And stock up on herb seeds that thrive in the cooler weather like chives, coriander, dill, cress and mint. Edible flowers like alyssum, calendula and cornflower will also do well this time of year. 🌿

Go wild with native everlasting daisy seeds in any empty spots in your garden or verge 🌸

It's the perfect time to plant trees and natives (hello verge project?!) 🌳

🐛 Don't plant your food in straight rows. Stagger and interplant instead.
🐛 Mix plantings up so you don't have blocks of any one shape or scent that are similar.
🐛 Plant flowers among your vegetables and plant vegetables among your flowers.
🐛 Plant strong smelling herbs like rosemary, sage and lavender nearby veggie patches.

Join us at this fun and empowering workshop. Held in a private urban permaculture garden in Kensington, you'll have the chance to see the principles of companion planting in action while you learn. There'll be nibbles and something refreshing to sip on. It's always a lovely time of learning, knowledge-sharing and connection with other gardeners.

Which variety of potato should you grow - determinate or indeterminate?

✅ Choose determinate potatoes if:

You want a quicker harvest.
You have more space for growing in a single layer.
You prefer less maintenance (minimal hilling).

✅ Choose indeterminate potatoes if:

You want higher yields.
You have limited space but more time to invest in hilling.
You enjoy experimenting with potato towers or vertical gardening.

Snaps from a composting workshop with these lovely people in Goomalling recently! What a treat to spend the day with folk from this Wheatbelt community who are wanting to improve soil and tackle waste issues. We even got to have a walk around the gorgeous Goomalling Community Garden where volunteers have transformed an empty block into a site for food growing, connection and friendship. Feeling very full-hearted after this visit. 💚🌱
