We were lucky enough to experience Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey the way it was intended, on IMAX 70mm film at IMAX Melbourne.
For anyone interested in cinema, this one is pretty special!
Odyssey Movie is the first feature film ever shot entirely using IMAX film cameras, with more than 2.1 million feet of film captured during production.
And IMAX Melbourne is one of the best places in the world to see it.
The screen measures an enormous 32 metres wide by 23 metres high, making it the largest cinema screen in the Southern Hemisphere and the world’s largest 1.43:1 IMAX screen. It’s also home to Australia’s only IMAX 70mm film projector.
Because the entire film was shot in the full 1.43:1 IMAX format, every frame fills that seven-storey-high screen, showing around 40% more image than a conventional widescreen cinema presentation.
The IMAX 70mm film frame is more than three times larger than standard 70mm, delivering native resolution often estimated at up to 16K.
Add a 15,000-watt, 12-channel sound system and it’s a fairly spectacular reminder of what a properly designed cinema experience can be.
A proper big-screen experience, and one we won't forget in a hurry.
