I was asked the other day, what’s the best oil to use for a chopping board.
It’s a bit like what’s best, tomato sauce or bbq sauce…..anyway the brand I use is Walrus oil and then 24 hrs later put on Walrus wax. (Just a note that I am not sponsored or supplied by Walrus).
There are plenty of other brands to use like Gilly’s, Whittle Waxes, U Beaut or Ecowoodoil.
How often to apply - now you will likely get different answers on this - some brands say 1 month, some 2 months or even when the board becomes dry/dull. It’s up to the individual.
Oh and it’s bbq over tomato!!

Finished a small hall table with natural edges made from Silky Oak. It’s not a true Oak but an Australian Native (Grevillea robusta). You can see the light pink to yellow hue colours.
It’s a nice timber to work with and wouldn’t mind making a box from some of it.

Size of table is length 1.025m, height 73.5cm with width at one end of 32cm and the other 29cm.

Table will be on show at SJ Farmers Market in Mundijong on 5th September and Perth Upmarket at UWA on 13th September.

So after a few weeks on annual leave it was about time to get back into the shed.

We had a few planks of Sheoak sitting in the garage and about time to clean them up to see what they look like. At this stage unsure if they will be a coffee or hall table. All depends on how they go through the thicknesser.

Made to order stove top cover completed. It is made from American Cherry (one of my favourites to work with) and external size is 63cm x 57cm x 9cm to fit a 60cm x 54cm stove top.
This took about 11 hours over a week to complete.

Another piece completed for November’s Armadale Hills Arts Trail.
Coffee table is made from Jarrah & Marri. Reason behind the curve was to try and match the curvy grain of the Jarrah. The base is Marri legs and Jarrah rails.
Size of table 110cm x 58.5cm x 45.5cm.
I would like to thank Dave Howlett at Perth Wood School who showed me the technique to have the curved pieces match and join correctly. Not as simple as it seems!
