Rediscover Ceramics by Danica Wichtermann Ceramic artist and teacher based in the Perth Hills, WA. Pottery workshops and home studio shop. Custom orders and gifts available.

Specialising in Australian botanical porcelain ceramics, sculpture, homewares and tableware. A childhood spent beachcombing, camping trips in the wilderness and a keen interest in botanicals, led Danica Wichtermann to channel her creativity and natural curiosity into the fine arts. It was a passion that inspired the Fremantle local to study visual arts. The results of her studies have enabled her to create her own ceramics collection Rediscover Ceramics, which she now makes by hand in her studio in Wattle Grove, Western Australia. Danica completed her formal education studying a Diploma of Education and a BA in Fine Arts at Curtin University. She has won multiple awards for her ceramic sculptures, participates in numerous exhibitions and is represented by multiple galleries in Australia. Her Porcelain Collections start their humble beginning on the pottery wheel. Over time, mounds of clay evolve to become a canvas that tells her story. Each surface resonates what she lives amongst and loves so dearly - the Great Australian Bush. Her passion is to encapsulate our vast landscapes and unique flora, capturing that which is so different from other lands. Contrasting colours and intricate sculptural forms endlessly inspire her days carving in her studio.

“From my home to yours; from my hands to yours. Please enjoy and Rediscover Ceramics.”

Becoming an artist and making money doing what you love?

It IS possible! 😮

Just make sure you also love…
📦 packing orders
📸 taking photos
💻 updating your website
📱 making reels
📧 answering emails
🧾 doing invoices
📊 doing the books
🏺 loading kilns
🧹 cleaning the studio
📦 buying packaging
📣 marketing yourself
…and approximately 487 other things that have absolutely nothing to do with making art. 😂

But honestly?

I’m incredibly grateful that I get to make a living doing something I love.

And even more grateful to the people who make that possible.

Whether you buy something, book a workshop, share my work, recommend me to a friend, or simply follow along and cheer me on …it all matters.

So to all the artists and makers out there trying to turn their passion into a business:

Keep going.

Just remember…
you’re not only becoming an artist. You’re becoming the marketing department, accounts department, sales team, photographer, cleaner, packer and CEO too. 😂

What actually goes into the price of a handmade pot?

If you’ve ever looked at a handmade piece and thought “That’s a lot for a pot” … there’s probably more behind that price than you realise.

It’s not simply:

clay + hours worked = price.

There are the obvious costs: clay, glazes, underglazes, kiln firings and packaging.

Then there are the costs of actually running a studio: equipment, kiln maintenance, electricity, water, tools, studio overheads and all the things that quietly add up.

And then there’s the business side.

Website fees.
Photography.
Marketing.
Admin.
Markets and exhibitions.
Packing orders.
Customer communication.

And when work is sold wholesale or through a gallery, there are also commissions or wholesale margins to factor in.

None of these things are visible when you pick up a finished pot.

You just see the finished piece.

But behind it is a whole creative business …and years of experience.

So the next time you’re comparing handmade with mass-produced, remember: they’re not really the same thing.

You’re not just paying for the object.

You’re helping support the person, their practice and the business that makes it possible.

And honestly… I could probably make a whole reel just about what goes into pricing one pot! 😆

A big thank you to everyone who came along to my Open Studio! 💛

It was so lovely to welcome you all, share my work, meet new people and catch up with regulars and collectors.

Thank you to everyone who purchased a piece, joined a mini clay session, brought a friend, chatted about ceramics or simply took the time to visit. Every bit of support means so much as a small, handmade business.

It was also wonderful to have our guest artists join us and share their incredible work. And the mini clay sessions were such a hit, with plenty of hands-on making and creative fun!

Missed us this time? You can still:

🌿 Shop handmade ceramics online.
🏡 Arrange an appointment to visit my Wattle Grove studio.
🤲 Book a pottery workshop and have a go at making something yourself.

Thanks again for supporting handmade and being part of the Rediscover Ceramics community.

“You can’t make a vase like this for under $100 using the methods I do.

And honestly, it’s not because I’m trying to make an expensive vase.

It’s because of the way I choose to make them.

This is porcelain, and there’s the clay, stains, multiple kiln firings, and all the time spent throwing, shaping, carving, decorating and inlaying the glaze.

And none of those steps are particularly fast.

Then there’s the drying time, the kiln, the testing, the pieces that don’t work, and all the years of experience behind knowing how to actually get the result I’m after.

So yes, you can buy a mass-produced vase for under $100.

But you can’t make this vase, using these materials and these techniques, for under $100 and sustainably run a small ceramics business.

Every vase is slow-made, not fast fashion.

And that’s really the point.

When you buy handmade, you’re buying the time, skill and process behind the finished piece.”
