Start with the palette when you're planning a living room around a fireplace.

Soft, pale walls let the flame be the warmest colour in the room. Here, there's a hint of teal in the canvas and a few stems of pampas on a low ledge. One warm cushion finishes it off. That's enough.

The New Forest sits into the wall, its wide, low flame as suited to this relaxed, coastal room as a formal one. Credit to our UK family at for the image.

Ask us about the New Forest range.

Some stoves are built to be looked at. The Parkray Aspect 8 Eco is one of them.

The wide window gives you a flame picture that fills the room, with a pre-heated airwash to keep the glass clear. It heats up to 195m² (11.3kW peak, 8.1kW average). It's 2030 compliant, with a 10-year warranty. Choose the high plinth or the long bench to suit your space.

Certified to AS/NZS 4012 and 4013.

If you're planning a new wood heater, get in touch and ask us about the Parkray Aspect 8 Eco.

At Maison Soleil, the fire looks as if it was always meant to be there.

This is the living room in Three Birds Renovations' House 18 on Sydney's North Shore. A limestone chimney breast anchors the room, with a Lopi 864 Clean Face 40K set into the stone.

Clean Face means no grills or louvers, with minimal metal between the glass and the stone. The fireplace feels part of the wall. It belongs there.

Behind the glass you get 8.1kW of output, enough to heat up to 185m². A 64% turndown lets you bring the flame right down on a mild spring evening, when you're after the look more than the warmth.

Talk to our team about the 864 Clean Face for your own living room.

The fireplace is the easy part. What sits behind the flame is where it starts to feel like yours.

Fireback liners are one of the simplest ways to go from choosing a unit to choosing a look. Herringbone brick, handmade brick, straight brick, stacked tan brick, ledgestone, old world stucco, or black glass, which reflects the flame and visually doubles the depth of the fire.

Worth knowing where it applies: fireback liners are an inbuilt gas option. They are not available on the freestanding gas models, and the wood range does not use them at all.

If you are renovating this spring, it is worth settling the finish early.

Ask us which fireback liners suit the model you are looking at.

Winter is done, but the best time to prep for next winter starts now. Save this. 🔥

Split your logs to size while the wood is easier to work, then stack them properly. Off the ground on a pallet or rack, clear of damp soil. Cover the top to keep rain and dew off, but leave the sides open. Airflow is what actually dries wood, not a tarp wrapped all the way round.

A spot with good sun and wind exposure speeds things up no end. Most hardwood needs a good six to twelve months of proper seasoning, so stacking it now over spring and summer sets you up for easy, efficient fires next winter.

Aim for under 20% moisture content. Ask our team if you would like a moisture meter recommendation.

Next winter feels a long way off, but installers' diaries fill up faster than you would think.

Spring and summer are the right time to book a wood heater upgrade or a new gas install. We have more availability now, the job gets done properly without anyone rushing, and you are ready to go from the first cold night instead of waiting on a queue.

If a new fireplace has been on your mind, get in touch and let us walk you through it.

If you have ever wondered why British Fires costs more than the alternatives, the answer starts a long way back.

It all began in the New Forest, Hampshire, in 1983, and British Fires has built its reputation on getting the flame right. Both the flame effect and the ambient underbed glow came out of genuine research into how a real log fire behaves, not a generic LED effect. Over 40 years, that attention to detail became the New Forest range.

Ask us about the New Forest range and the story behind it.
