Give a Man a Fish, He Eats for a Day.

Teach a Man to Garden… and the Whole Neighbourhood Gets Tomatoes! 🍅

It starts innocently enough.

A couple of tomato seedlings. A sunny spot. Some good soil.

Then suddenly you’re picking tomatoes faster than you can eat them.

The neighbours get tomatoes.
The family gets tomatoes.
Workmates get tomatoes.
Someone who popped over to borrow a ladder leaves with tomatoes.

That’s one of the joys of growing your own food. A productive garden has a wonderful way of producing more than food – it gets people sharing, talking and connecting.

Of course, every great tomato crop starts somewhere…

Healthy soil.

Give those tomato plants the right foundation with nutrient-rich soil, plenty of organic matter and a little love, and before long you might become that neighbour handing out tomatoes by the bagful.

Grow food. Share food. Build community

If you are unsure what your soil needs, bring in a sample, and we can do a free pH test and show you how to get your soil working for you.

Now we’re helping more landscapers, nurseries, growers and industry professionals achieve the same results for their clients.

Perth and WA certainly give us some interesting soil conditions to work with! From coastal sands that struggle to retain water and nutrients to laterite clay soils through the Perth Hills, getting the soil right from the beginning can make a huge difference to the long-term success of a landscape.

Our trade range can support:

Lawn installation, topdressing and refurbishment

Planter boxes and raised gardens

Vertical, balcony and rooftop gardens

Native revegetation projects

Vegetable gardens and wicking beds

Specific plant groups and growing requirements

pH adjustment

Growing your own vegetables is incredibly rewarding, but even the freshest home-grown produce doesn’t last forever!

The tricky part is knowing the difference between a veggie that’s looking a little tired and one that really needs to head for the compost bin.

Keep an eye out for:

🥕 Slimy or sticky surfaces – a good indication that spoilage has begun.

🥦 Mould – visible fuzzy patches or unusual growth are a definite warning sign.

🥬 Strong or unpleasant smells – fresh vegetables shouldn’t smell sour, rotten or fermented.

🍅 Very soft, leaking or collapsing produce – a slightly soft tomato may still be fine for cooking, but leaking, rotten or mouldy produce needs to go.

🥒 Major discolouration or decay – a few marks can often be trimmed away, but widespread browning, blackening or rotting means it’s time to say goodbye.

🥗 Wilting isn’t always the end! Some leafy greens, celery and herbs that have wilted may still be perfectly usable if there are no signs of spoilage. A soak in cold water can sometimes perk them back up.

Rather than sending spoiled home-grown veggies to landfill, add suitable scraps to your compost or worm farm and let the garden have them back.

Today’s tired zucchini could become tomorrow’s beautiful, healthy soil. 🌱

Grow it. Eat it. Compost it. Grow it again.

That’s a garden doing what it does best!

Growing your own food is like printing your own money.

Every tomato, lettuce, carrot or handful of herbs harvested from your garden is one less item on the supermarket receipt. The savings add up over time, especially when fresh produce continues to grow season after season.

The benefits go far beyond your wallet. Homegrown fruit and vegetables are picked at their freshest, giving you nutritious food packed with flavour to help support good health and wellbeing.

Healthy soil grows healthy food, and healthy food helps grow healthier people.

Start with good soil, plant something today, and enjoy the rewards for months to come. ‌

Chickens aren’t only there for the fresh eggs. In a permaculture garden, these feathered little workers can become part of the whole growing system.

Give them the right space and chickens can:

🐔Scratch and turn over the soil

🐔Eat insects, grubs and garden pests

🐔Help clean up fallen fruit and garden scraps

🐔Turn kitchen scraps into valuable manure

🐔Help create nutrient-rich compost for the garden

It’s nature’s version of a gardening team… although this team does tend to eat on the job!

The secret is managing where and when chickens have access to the garden. Left to their own devices, they won’t necessarily understand that your newly planted veggie patch is off limits!

Their manure is also a valuable resource, but fresh chicken manure can be too strong to apply directly around plants. Adding it to your compost and allowing it to break down first helps turn waste into something your soil will love.

That’s what permaculture is all about – creating a system where different parts of the garden work together.

Healthy chickens contribute to healthy compost. Healthy compost feeds healthy soil. Healthy soil grows healthy plants.

At Green Life Soil Co, we believe some of the best gardening happens when you work with nature rather than against it.
