Tales From The Hood

Year - 1995

Personal Note -

This is one of those soundtracks that feels 100% tied to the movie it accompanied. The soundtrack is a good length and contains dark production, heavy bass and a sense of danger around every corner.

I suspect this film & soundtrack have a bigger cult following than most people suspect and it's definitely one for heads who appreciate the darker side of 90's hip hop with horror-core influences. Peace.

Overview -

Tales From The Hood is one of the most unique hip hop horror films of the 90's. Released in 1995, the movie blended supernatural horror with powerful social commentary, touching on racism, police brutality, gangs and community struggles.

The soundtrack followed that same formula, delivering a dark, street-level collection of tracks from some of the era’s hardest voices.

The album brought together an a-list of artists, including Inspectah Deck, Facemob, Spice 1, Ol' Dirty Bastard, MC Eiht, Gravediggaz, The Click and more. It's gritty, eerie and perfectly matched the atmosphere of the film.

Hip Hop Soundtrack Week V2 rolls on and Day 4 takes us back to 1998 with a soundtrack that perfectly captured the late 90's West Coast energy..

The Players Club

Year - 1998

Personal Note -

Although it was the late 90's when this film dropped, the production, artwork, and the film itself all remind us that soundtracks were still a major event.

This one has smooth tracks, hard street joints, and enough quality that it stands on it's own feet.

I still remember going to hire it on video and it's one that deserves more flowers when discussing hip hop soundtracks from that period. Peace.

Overview -

Released alongside Ice Cube’s directorial debut, The Players Club soundtrack delivered a strong mix of West Coast heat, smooth R&B cuts and late-90s street anthems.

The soundtrack perfectly matched the atmosphere of the film — flashy, gritty, soulful and full of personality.
Featuring artists including Ice Cube, Master P, DMX, Scarface, Kurupt and Mack 10. The soundtrack captured the sound of the era while balancing club records with deeper street-driven tracks.

While some hip hop movie soundtracks leaned heavily commercial by the late 90s, The Players Club still carried enough rawness and regional flavour to keep heads locked in.

Murder Was The Case

Year - 1994

Personal Note -

This soundtrack is dark and cinematic from start to finish. The production has that unmistakable mid-90's Westcoast/Death Row sound. It’s one of those soundtracks that instantly takes me back to high school and the anticipation of the next release from Tha Row.

This one just missed out on inclusion for HHSW1 but was well worthy as it stands strong as its own classic hip hop release. Peace.

Overview -

Released in 1994 alongside the short film of the same name, Murder Was The Case captured Death Row Records at its peak.

Executive produced by Dr. Dre and Suge Knight, the soundtrack blended G-Funk, street tales and West Coast atmosphere into a project that felt bigger than just a soundtrack.

Featuring Snoop Doggy Dogg, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Tha Dogg Pound, DJ Quik, Scarface and more, this album became an important snapshot of West Coast hip hop during one of it's most dominant eras.

High School High: The Soundtrack

Personal Note -

Every hip hop head remembers this movie, but the soundtrack itself was also stacked from front to back.

This one has Big Beat peak energy and delivers everything from tight bars & boombap drums to soulful hooks.

It's definitely one of those albums that deserves more respect when discussing classic hip hop soundtracks which is why it made the cut for HHSW V2. Peace.

Overview -

Released through Big Beat Records alongside the comedy parody film, this soundtrack ended up being far more serious than the movie itself.

Packed with hip hop and R&B heavyweights, the album brought together artists like Wu-Tang Clan, The Roots, Pete Rock & Large Professor, De La Soul, Erykah Badu & D’Angelo, Lil’ Kim, Scarface and more. The soundtrack would go on to reach No. 20 on the Billboard 200 and earn Gold certification in the US.

You’ve got rugged boom bap cuts sitting next to smooth soulful records, while still keeping that unmistakable mid-90s atmosphere throughout. “Wu-Wear: The Garment Renaissance” became a standout Wu-Tang anthem, while “Rap World” from Pete Rock & Large Professor remains a serious head-nodder for underground hip hop fans. The Erykah Badu & D’Angelo duet “Your Precious Love” also gave the project a timeless soul element that still sounds incredible today.

All week I’ll be digging back into some of the most iconic hip hop film soundtracks of the 90's. From gritty street classics, to cult favourites, and overlooked gems. These tapes helped shape the atmosphere of an era where hip hop and cinema combined perfectly.

Starting things off with an absolute essential… 🍊🧃

Juice Soundtrack

Year - 1992

Personal Note -

Playing this soundtrack tonight instantly transports me back to the mid-90's with that raw East Coast energy.

The Juice tape feels authentic from start to finish and perfectly matches the theme & mood of the movie.

Even decades later, the atmosphere, production and lineup still go hard. This is an essential soundtrack material for hip hop heads and was mentioned several times when I did the first soundtrack week. Peace.

Released in 1992 alongside the iconic film starring Tupac Shakur, Juice captured the gritty atmosphere of early 90s New York while showcasing some of the strongest hip hop and R&B talent of the era.

The soundtrack blends hardcore street records, conscious lyricism and soulful cuts that perfectly mirror the tension and energy of the movie itself.

Featuring artists Eric B. & Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Cypress Hill, Salt-N-Pepa and Naughty by Nature, this soundtrack remains one of the defining hip hop film companion releases of the golden era.

Artifacts - Between A Rock And A Hard Place

Year - 1994

Personal Note -

It's Friday night here in Perth and time to load a classic in the deck. I've had the reissue from for a while but recently managed to get my hands on the U.S. OG (both pictured on the last slide).

The chemistry on this LP between Tame One and El Da Sensei always felt natural, like two graffiti writers bringing that same train-yard energy through the speakers.

“Wrong Side Of Da Tracks” alone is enough to cement this album in underground hip hop history, but the deeper cuts are what really make it special for heads who appreciate dusty drums, jazz loops and authentic lyricism (Dynamite Soul is also a personal favourite).

There’s also something timeless about how heavily the album represents graffiti culture (similar to the KRS self-titled classic) without sounding commercial. You can hear the passion for the artform in every track.

This is one of those records that reminds you why the mid-90's underground scene still carries so much respect today. Pure boom bap craftsmanship 🔥 Peace

One of the purest underground East Coast hip hop albums of the mid-90s. Between a Rock and a Hard Place by Artifacts captured graffiti culture, boom bap production and raw mic chemistry without chasing radio trends.

Released in 1994 through Big Beat/Atlantic, the album became a certified “heads know” classic thanks to joints like “Wrong Side Of Da Tracks”, “C’mon Wit Da Git Down” and “Dynamite Soul.”

Production from Buckwild, T-Ray and Redman gave the record that dusty, rugged New York/New Jersey feel that still sounds authentic today.

One Million Strong - The Album

Year - 1995

Personal Note -

I'm featuring something today which I've never seen posted before, however all of us hip hop heads know what's up.. I also ripped the original 'Runnin'' audio which wasn't on IG or streaming.

This is one of those slept-on compilations that deserves way more recognition than it gets. The atmosphere across the whole project is heavy and authentic. All tracks were also donated by artists following the historic march.

Just the fact that 2Pac and Biggie appear together (a legitimate track, not some bullsh*t remix) instantly makes this tape historic, but there’s also something really dope about the mix of conscious, underground and forgotten gems throughout.

Definitely one of those tapes that feels even more meaningful looking back now knowing how times have changed. It was good listening to it in the deck today. This is a piece of hip hop history. Peace.

Released in the shadow of the historic Million Man March, One Million Strong brought together some of hip hop’s heaviest voices for a project rooted in unity, awareness and street reality.

The compilation blends political energy, conscious themes and raw mid-90s production, while still carrying that rugged East/West sound of the era.

Featuring names like 2Pac, Notorious B.I.G., Wu-Tang affiliates, Public Enemy, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Mobb Deep, Ice-T and more, the album feels like a time capsule.

The tape itself has that underground-era energy too, with dark artwork, stacked features and that unmistakable 90s compilation feel.
