When designing a kitchen for a development project, the challenge lies in creating a space that feels both universally appealing and thoughtfully refined. As a designer, you’re constantly balancing budget, buyer expectations, and timeless style — selecting finishes that are safe yet sophisticated.
In this project, the palette is intentionally neutral, allowing texture and proportion to carry the impact. We used an engineered quartz benchtop with a bold 60mm waterfall edge to create a strong architectural statement, paired with a porcelain stone splashback in the same tonal family for seamless continuity.
Porcelain is a favourite choice for splashbacks — at just 6mm thick, it provides a refined surface texture without encroaching on valuable benchtop depth (unlike engineered stone, which requires a minimum 20mm thickness and can affect appliance clearances).
The result is a contemporary kitchen that feels warm, balanced, and market-ready — proving that restraint, when applied with precision, can be just as powerful as bold design.
