There was a time when I assumed the Royal Flying Doctor Service was for people who live in the outback.
It was late on Saturday 1 November last year, and I was getting ready for Canberra Frocktails when the phone rang. My husband Matthew had fallen ill on a two-week work trip to Western Australia. While the RFDS flew him from Esperance to Perth for the emergency surgery that saved his life, I was at home scrambling for a seat on a plane.
You don't have to live remote. You just have to be somewhere remote when it happens.
This October we're each cycling 583 kilometres — the distance they flew him — to raise money for the RFDS. We're aiming for $10,000.
