// There's a reason some rooms feel like a warm embrace the moment you walk in - and it's not magic. It's intentional design.

Warmth in interior design is achieved through a carefully considered combination of five key principles: colour, texture, material, light and scale. When you get these right, your home stops feeling like a house and starts feeling like a haven.

In this carousel I'm breaking down each principle so you can start applying them to your own space today - whether you're doing a full renovation or simply refreshing what you already have.

Let’s begin with colour. Selecting the right hues can instantly transform a room, creating an atmosphere that resonates with comfort and coziness. Opt for warm tones like rich browns, deep reds, or soft creams to evoke a sense of welcoming warmth.

Next, consider texture. Incorporating a variety of textures adds depth and interest to your space. Think about plush rugs, soft throws, or woven baskets that invite touch and create a tactile experience.

Material choice is another crucial factor. Natural materials such as wood, stone, and wool not only bring warmth but also imbue a space with authenticity and timelessness.

Lighting plays a pivotal role in setting the mood. Layered lighting - combining ambient, task, and accent lighting - creates a dynamic environment that can be adjusted to suit different moods and times of day.

Finally, scale refers to the proportion and size of furnishings and decor elements. Ensuring that pieces are appropriately scaled to the room prevents overcrowding and helps maintain a balanced, harmonious look.

By thoughtfully integrating these principles, you can craft an inviting sanctuary tailored to your personal style and needs.

Save this one - you'll want to come back to it. 🏠✨

// Open plan spaces should feel connected… not chaotic.

Define zones with:

– Rugs

– Lighting

– Furniture placement

Flow is everything.

To create a harmonious open plan space, it’s essential to thoughtfully delineate areas while maintaining a seamless flow.

Rugs are a fantastic tool for anchoring spaces, providing both visual boundaries and a touch of comfort. Choosing the right lighting can further enhance the ambiance and define zones; pendant lights over a dining area or floor lamps beside a reading nook can establish distinct environments without the need for walls.

Furniture placement also plays a crucial role; arranging sofas and chairs to face each other can create an inviting conversation area, while open shelving units can subtly separate spaces without blocking sightlines.

By thoughtfully curating these elements, you ensure each zone feels purposeful yet connected, fostering both functionality and aesthetic coherence.

// “Our home finally feels like us.”

Mel helped me find my style. I was so indecisive with what I wanted, it was only due to the fact of having Mel by my side guiding me, that I was able to make the right decisions. My confidence has improved and I'm hiring Mel again for my next project of renovating my bathrooms.

That’s always the goal.

Not just a beautiful space - but one that reflects how you actually live.

// Most homes don’t need a full renovation…

They just need these common mistakes fixed 👇

1. Poor furniture layout
Furniture placement can make or break a room. When pieces are pushed against walls, block pathways, or face away from focal points, the space feels awkward and uninviting. Good layout creates natural flow, encourages conversation, and makes rooms feel larger and more functional.

2. Not enough lighting
Relying on a single overhead light is one of the most common design mistakes. Layered lighting - combining ambient, task, and accent lights - transforms any space instantly. Add table lamps, floor lamps, and wall sconces to create depth and warmth throughout your room.

3. Ignoring storage
Clutter is the enemy of good design. Many homeowners overlook the importance of hidden storage solutions that keep everyday items out of sight. Built-in cabinets, ottomans with storage, floating shelves, and furniture with concealed compartments can transform a chaotic space into a serene retreat. The key is planning storage into your design from the start, not as an afterthought.

4. Rugs that are too small
A rug that's too small can make your furniture look disconnected and your room feel unfinished. Your rug should be large enough to anchor your seating area, with at least the front legs of your furniture resting on it. This creates visual cohesion and makes the space feel intentionally designed.

5. No cohesion
A room filled with beautiful pieces can still feel "off" if there's no visual thread connecting them. Choose a cohesive colour palette and repeat textures, materials, or shapes throughout the space. This creates harmony and makes your home feel intentionally designed rather than randomly assembled.

Design is often about what you remove or rework.
