Recently Kate did a "Tension Experiment" by knitting the same 4ply pattern twice on the same size needles: once on metal needles and once on wooden needles. Have a look at the results! The metal needles gave a tension of 26.5sts/10cm, while the wooden needles resulted in 29sts/10cm. No wonder the multi-coloured one came out quite wide - 2.5sts/10cm is quite a difference.

Learn from Kate's experiment (*cough* mistake): always stick to the same type of needle as your swatch, and double-check your tension before switching things up!

Now that the science is done, Kate will get on to re-knitting the multi-coloured garment at the correct tension. 🤦

Just letting you all know that we'll be closed from Friday 3 April through to Monday 6 April, re-opening with normal hours from Tuesday 7 April. We'll be taking a well-deserved Easter break!

This weekend, 5-8 March, the Grand Prix car race will be happening around the Albert Park lake. While we know this brings much revenue to local hospitality venues, it's really quiet for us as many people avoid the area unless they're here to see the zooms.

So come and visit! We'll be open our regular hours, 12-5pm on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday, then 12-4pm on the Sunday. Either come via the M1 (Montague St exit) or up Beach Rd to avoid the race area.

Finished Object FOto: Recently popped in to show us her finished crochet blanket - isn't it gorgeous! It was completed* the night before her granddaughter was born, ready for her first photos in hospital. She used a join-as-you-go method to add an extra round on her squares, while also joining them together - this saved a lot of time and looks great!

Made in Bellissimo 8ply from her own pattern.

FYI: on Tuesday 27 Jan, Wool Baa will be closed. We've taken this extraordinary measure due to the extreme weather forecast for the day - 45C is a day to be safely inside, staying as cool and as hydrated as possible. I can't imagine many people would be out to visit us on a day that hot, anyway! We need to take care of the health of staff too, so I'm hoping us being closed won't inconvenience many people.

As 2025 comes to a close, I want to thank everyone for your support this year, and Merry Christmas to those that celebrate it. I hope you all have a safe and relaxing summer break - see you in 2026.

Wool Baa re-opens on Tuesday 13 Jan, 12-5pm after a well-deserved rest. We'll be closed on Sundays and Mondays in January, then back to normal hours in Feb.

Online orders may be slightly delayed while we are closed, but I'll come in during January to sort them out if need be.

The Iola Baby Blanket pattern, by Debra Kinsey, is a fascinating knit. Worked in pieces and then sewn together, the stripes then form these mind-bending shapes! I've always felt it was an underappreciated pattern, so we now have a sample on display.

Kate used Adorn Silky Merino Dk in 108 Lime, Bellissimo 8ply in 202 Beige, with Fiori Dk in 085 Late Autumn.
