Happy 12th Birthday Byzantine Design.
When a girl turns 12 in the Jewish religion she has a Bat Mitzvah and comes of age.
I saw my first store and fell in love with the space instantly, the space fit the picture I carried in my head and heart for many years. An older building with a central doorway and full height windows. She was perfect.
I had moved to Melbourne the year before and knew less than 5 people! Its crazy when I look back, no wonder people around didn’t understand why I would uproot my life in Sydney to move to Melbourne and start a business.
But I knew in my soul it was the right decision for me and Byzantine Design.
And I haven’t regretted it for a second. I am Melbourne in my soul, I love this city and all it has given me.
I built the space with a friend, it was so cute and lovely and all mine. Gradually it filled with more and more beautiful product and began to be known within the design industry.
I eventually outgrew the space and moved 5 doors up the road to share a space with . Turned out the week we moved COVID hit and it worked well for us to share.
Then late 2024 a space I had my eye on for a while came up for lease. I put in an offer and built a new showroom (the one I thought I’d be in in Year 5, not 12) which we moved into December 2024.
Byzantine Design has really grown and matured into an adult now. I’ve made many mistakes along the way and learnt all the lessons. Sometimes the same lessons over and over.
This business is what I have poured all of my creativity and soul into, and I’m so proud of where we are at today.
I’m so proud of what I’ve built, and for the support of the village behind me.
A million thank yous to everyone who come along on this crazy ride
Dara xoxo
