🌱 SOIL PREPARATION: THERE’S NO ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL APPROACH!

Wow! We’ve had a load of questions about soil preparation since people spotted us getting stuck into the patch in our stories.

The products we’ve used are featured in our Facebook stories, but here’s the important bit: amending your soil isn’t a generic process.

At Brundee Blooms, we’re making amendments based on the results of our soil test. We’re not throwing products at the ground and hoping for the best!

Think of it this way: a doctor doesn’t prescribe medication without first identifying the problem. Your soil deserves the same considered approach. 🌱

That said, agricultural lime, gypsum and blood and bone are commonly used in soil preparation programs, depending on the soil’s existing condition and what you’re trying to achieve.

Our advice? Test your soil first, understand what the results are telling you, and amend accordingly.

Because growing better dahlias starts beneath the surface. 🌸

Brundee Blooms — quality starts in the soil.

🌱 The Cutting Experiment: Can We Grow Better Dahlias?

This season, we’ve set ourselves a challenge at Brundee Blooms: put a theory to the test.

We’ve been told that taking cuttings from your best dahlias can be a valuable way to invigorate stock that may be deteriorating over time, while allowing you to multiply superior plants and build on their genetics.

It’s a method well established in the UK, where growing dahlias from cuttings is commonplace. Many of Australia’s exhibition growers also use cuttings, or grow from tubers produced by those cuttings.

Over seasons of traditional propagation, dahlia varieties multiplied exclusively by dividing old tubers tend to slowly lose their vitality and decline in performance over time. Propagating from cuttings is widely theorised to slow or halt this genetic degradation. By sourcing material from the freshest, most actively growing meristematic tissue at the top of a shoot, growers essentially "rejuvenate" the line, maintaining the plant's historic vigour.

3. Reduced Disease and Pathogen Transmission

Tubers spend months dormant underground and in winter storage, making them highly susceptible to harboring soil-borne pathogens, fungal pests, and systemic viruses. Cuttings offer a much cleaner start:
• Cuttings are snipped from rapid new spring growth, which often outruns the spread of certain internal viruses.

So, naturally, we wanted to see for ourselves.

This season, we’re aiming to grow the majority of our stock from cuttings rather than directly from tubers. We’ll be putting the plants through their paces and watching closely to see how they perform.

🌸 Will we see a difference in plant vigour, flower quality or results on the show bench?

Only time will tell!

We’re all about learning, experimenting and continually striving for better at Brundee Blooms. We’ll share the journey, the observations and the results along the way.

Because when you’re chasing quality, you never stop asking questions.

Stay tuned, Bloomers. The experiment is underway! 🌱🌸

🌱 Hilling Up at Brundee Blooms | Preparing for Planting

The rows are taking shape, and we’re one step closer to getting our dahlias in the ground! 🌸

Inspired by seeing Highland Dahlias beds last year, we adopted the same approach here — digging out the paths and using that soil to build up our rows. Simple, practical and effective!

There’s a method to the madness when it comes to hilling up our rows. It’s not just about making the patch look tidy — it’s about creating the best possible growing environment for our dahlias.

Here’s why we’re putting in the extra work:

💧 Superior Drainage
Dahlias absolutely hate wet feet! Raised rows help excess water drain away, reducing the risk of tuber rot and keeping roots healthier, particularly through our unpredictable South Coast weather.

☀️ Warmer Soil, Earlier Growth
Elevated rows can warm up faster as the sun reaches more of the soil surface. Dahlias love warmth, and soil temperatures around 15°C and above are generally suitable for planting, provided conditions are right.

🌱 Better Growing Conditions
Well-formed rows give us a defined planting area, improve access for maintenance and make it easier to manage staking, weeding and the general care our plants need throughout the season.

And let’s be honest — with the amount of work that goes into preparing a quality dahlia patch, we want to give every plant the best possible start!

About 10 years ago, we started a café, and I still remember the emotions that came with receiving customer reviews. Every kind word meant something, and some stayed with us long after the plates were cleared and the coffee cups emptied.

Fast forward to today, and here we are, starting our first selling season at Brundee Blooms. 🌸

I honestly cannot tell you how overjoyed we are to receive feedback like this. When you put so much care, time and heart into what you do, knowing it makes a difference to someone else is incredibly rewarding.

Quality has always mattered to us. To have someone recognise that effort so early in our journey means more than words can say.

I received a beautiful gift. These pekin pins are fantastic quality and I believe would make a great alternate prize to the traditional style ribbons or rosettes that are done to death.

I have attached the Etsy listing to the seller because I think a few breed clubs might see the potential in this product!

🌸 BRUNDEE BLOOMS FARM SALE DAY — UPDATE! 🌸

We’re putting the finishing touches on our guest list, but we’re happy to announce that Dahlia Society of NSW & ACT will be joining us!

As Nowra will be hosting the State Championship it is customary that our area would host an opportunity for The Society to help get advice and stock into locals hands in the hope they might join us in 2027 for the Nowra Show South Coast Floral Festival- Feb 28th, Nowra Showground.

And there’s more! Graeme Davis will be presenting a seminar on:

🌿 “How to Successfully Grow Dahlias Both in the Garden and for the Show Bench”

🕦 11:30am — Saturday, 24 October

Whether you’re growing your first dahlia or chasing that elusive champion bloom, this is one not to miss!

🌸 NOW, LET’S TALK UNICORNS. 🦄

The messages, emails and downright begging for unicorns have been quite something! So, in true Brundee Blooms fashion, we’ve decided not to do things the way they’ve always been done.

It will NOT be first in, first served.

We refuse to encourage people turning up at ungodly hours to secure a sought-after tuber. It’s uncivilised, entirely unnecessary, and quite frankly, our cattle dog will not cope with such out-of-the-ordinary behaviour.

She’s much like her owner — she appreciates a little decorum. 😂

So, here’s how we’ll do it:

🎟️ At 10am, everyone present will receive a raffle ticket.

🎩 The order of selection will then be drawn from a hat, giving everyone present a fair opportunity without the need for midnight queues, camping chairs or competitive dahlia warfare.

We love a little excitement, and we certainly appreciate the enthusiasm. But we also believe a farm sale should be enjoyable, fair and just a little bit fun.

📍 Brundee Blooms Farm Sale Day
📅 Saturday, 24 October
⏰ 10am–2pm

Come for the dahlias, stay for the seminar, the famous scones, the coffee and the company.

And please — let the cattle dog have her sleep-in. 🐾😂
