This small weaving has a very big story. ❤️ In Yolŋu kinship, your mother and her sisters are all your mothers. Mary was Judy’s biological Mum, and Evonne is her second Mum. Mary recently passed away, leaving behind this small weaving that she had started but never finished. So Judy finished it for her Mum.
This is Judy’s very first weaving. Judy has a disability that affects her hands, which makes weaving difficult, but she is determined to learn and to keep trying carrying on something that was so much a part of her Mum’s life and knowledge. Since Mary passed, Judy and Evonne have been spending a lot more time together. Judy often says to Evonne, “You’re my only Mum left now. Mary’s hands began it. Judy’s hands finished it.

Collective Mothering brings together artist-mothers whose practices explore care, kinship, and communal continuity. Spanning new commissions, existing works, performance, publishing, and public programs, the exhibition considers how acts of mothering shape our relationships with ourselves, our families, our communities, and the world around us.
